Spring is here and Scavenger Lifestyles

Off-the-Grid Economics

There are dozens of ‘survivalist’ sites available to you on the internet. Most of them and related print magazines are devoted to finding a place in the country to ‘homestead.’ While this is a terrific goal, one that I had achieved in the late 90s (we had a great 38-acre spread), it’s not always practical or affordable for most…even with the recession, land prices in most (not all) parts of the country are still expensive and even in ‘recession-torn Michigan, virtually no one is offering cheap land.

Going completely off-the-grid is not an inexpensive process, even for DIY folks. We also, at one point, owned 40-acres of vacant land in AZ which we had planned as our off-the-grid retirement project. An uninsured illness and other factors forced us to sell that land. While planning that project we estimated it would cost us nearly $45,000 to become completely energy self-sufficient excluding the cost of the home itself.

That’s why our Poor Man site and Bulletin is devoted more to the Urban Survivalist. Most of us will be happy to cut our utilities in half, earn a living from home, and to supplement our larder with natural, home-grown food. Not all of us have a complete workshop with our own lumber mill and a circle of like-minded DIY’ers to help us out…hell, I can’t even convince my wife to go along with some of the stuff I do (she will not help raise any animal she might have to eat). Of course, I do throw my politically incorrect insights about how the government mistreats its one-time masters into the mix!

I’ve always admired the Amish, many of whom I’ve hired over the years to perform tough carpentry projects, farrier work, etc. Because of community, they can raise a barn in a weekend without any kind of debt! It’s tough to find that sense of community in most localities. (More on Amish in next issue).

In that regard I’ll soon expand my book offerings to include a useful new book by Brett Markham called Mini-Farming: Self-Sufficiency of ¼ Acre. I’m waiting on his publisher for prices. As you noted in the previous issue, we’re also offering the best book on stockpiling, now in its 11th edition – Don’t Get Caught With Your Pantry Down, available on our site. In 1999 we distributed case lots of this book and it’s one I suggest everyone in America own.

Finally, another useful paperback we’ve begun stocking is Anneli Rufus’ Scavengers’ Manifesto: a guide to freeing yourself from the endless cycle of buying stuff and discovering how salvaging, swapping and recycling can save your cash and the earth! This is currently available on my eBay site at 40% less than bookstore prices – go to www.Oldbooknook.com to order.

With all the doom & gloom that’s fit to print…stock market crashes, earthquakes, oil leaks, mass murders, mining accidents, bomb plots, etc. don’t you think it might be prudent to become more self reliant and prepared?

Myth: Brown eggs are different than white.

Fact: The only difference between a brown and white egg is the color of the shell, which is merely a reflection of the breed of the hen. In general, but not always, hens with white feathers and earlobes lay white eggs and those with dark feathers and red earlobes lay brown eggs.

Frugality among consumers is outliving recession

A new frugality among consumers whose wealth has shrunk is outliving the recession…Gee, what’s the Poor Man been saying for years now?

Even as the economic recovery plods ahead, many American consumers are refusing to come along.

They're not spending freely -- and they have no plans to.

Many of them have steady income. They aren't saddled by high debts. They don't fear losing their jobs. Yet despite recent gains, they've lost so much household wealth that they're far more cautious about spending than before the recession.

Their behavior suggests that the Great Recession may have bred a new frugality that will endure well into the recovery. And because consumers fuel about 70 percent of the economy, their tightfisted habits means the rebound could stay unusually sluggish.

Survey of Jobless Finds “No End in Sight”

A new national survey of unemployed Americans reports that nearly 80 percent of those who lost jobs during the Great Recession were still without work as of March 2010.

In a report titled No End in Sight: The Agony of Prolonged Unemployment (pdf) released today by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, researchers found that of those surveyed who were jobless in August 2009 only 13 percent had found full-time work.

According to Professor Carl Van Horn, a co-author of the report:

“Despite recent signs that the worst phase of the Great Recession may be behind us, the vast majority of jobless Americans have not found new jobs. When they did find work, most took pay cuts and/or lost benefits. Among those still searching for work — many for more than a year — are millions who have never been without a job and who have at least a college education. The inability of these job seekers to find new opportunities is an economic and cultural disaster.”

The report is based on a six-month follow-up survey of unemployed Americans included in a September 2009 study titled The Anguish of Unemployment.

This latest follow-up found that of those who were jobless last August only 21 percent had found any work. Less than 10 percent had found jobs that were at least on par with their previous pay levels. Of those newly reemployed more than half had settled for lower pay, and more than one-third had accepted reduced benefits.

In what will come as no surprise to many older jobless workers, the new survey found only 12 percent of those over age 50 had found either full- or part-time work, compared to 21 percent of those age 30 to 49, and 29 percent ages 18 to 29.

Related Story…

The latest survey to hit the wires is the Kelly Global Workforce Index, which surveyed more than 30,000 Americans about their entrepreneurial inclination.

There are some interesting results to report:

  • More than 1/3 of the respondents describe themselves as "free agents". I'm surprised that only 1/3 said this, as it is ever more clear that large corporations consider all of their employees as "free agents" - subject to termination whenever they feel the need to boost the stock price to up the obscene value of executive stock options.
  •  38% of Boomers describe themselves as "free agents" compared to 33% for Gen X folks.
  • 52% of Boomers say that they have the skills to start a business.
  • The largest concentration of self-employed or free-agent people is in Hartford, CT (52 percent), followed by Baton Rouge, LA (50%).
  • NOTE - The main factor preventing Americans from becoming free agents is uncertainty about income, followed by availability/cost of replacing corporate health care.

Says the surveys director: "We are seeing a new mindset among many workers who do not share the same concerns about job security as their parents nor do they place such high value on lifelong career, or attachment to one employer".

How to Stay Anonymous Online

If you want to stay inconspicuous while online, here are some products, services, and best practices to put to use

The good news is that you can take back control of what others see and know of you online. Here's how.

CHECK YOUR STEALTH
Put your PC through an Internet anonymity test to see just how stealthy it really is. Whenever you connect to Web sites, you're basically telling them your IP address—if nothing else. Based on that information alone, sites can tell a lot about you, such as your general location. If you want to get an idea about what you're telling the Web, check out sites like What the Internet Knows About You and Stay Invisible

ANONYMOUS E-MAIL
Let's face it, as nice as it is to remain anonymous as you surf, it's almost essential for your e-mail to go unnoticed, or you're going to be swamped with spam in no time. Consider this: Recently, a PCMag editor created a Hotmail account, did nothing with it, and days later he was getting over 500 unsolicited messaged a day. If you prefer a Web-based mail service, Google's Gmail has, without a doubt, the best spam catcher in the business.

In addition, you can avoid putting your e-mail out in the wild by using an alias. These sometimes-temporary addresses can be doled out as you receive requests from Web services or elsewhere. You might be able to set one up if you own your own domain name.

Buying an alias or two is also an option. For example, Anonymizer's Nyms, short for pseudonym, provides alias e-mail addresses for $20 a year. Anonymizer ensures that you still receive your messages but without the sender knowing your real address.

What's telling about Pennsylvania's taxpayer attack ad campaign is that it brags how you have no shield of privacy from government snoops. It is a classic example of a disturbing trend: A situation in which bureaucrats have forgotten their place as public servants and now openly regard taxpayers as subjects to be preyed upon -- not a master to serve.

Why it’s happening – same old story: government greed…

Northwestern University economist Joshua Rauh recently calculated 50 states' pension obligations by removing the rigged statistics governments use to make their pensions appear solvent. Rauh learned that in addition to horrific operating deficits, state government pension obligations are (on a national level) a whopping three times greater than their rapidly collapsing reserves.

I don’t want to get into printing recipes every issue but thanks Carolyn for this cool recipe that we’ll all enjoy!

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug (MicroSafe)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.  Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well..
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired. EAT ! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).
And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

Parting Shots

We finished a busy weekend participating in a community wide garage sale. As anyone who has ever set up a three day sale knows, the challenge is in the set up. In this part of the country we’ve had problems with weather and tons of rain ruining the first day…or so I thought. We actually had more customers on the day it rained the hardest-go figure.

The Heritage Foundation’s Economic Freedom Index shows the US slipping in its freedom rankings to below that of Canada…who would have guessed?! It’s also clear the long-term trend of our dollar is headed downward, especially with huge and growing deficits and our trillion dollar plus unfunded liabilities for Social Security and Medicare and of course, new reports indicate Obama’s healthcare plan will be higher than originally promised – much, much higher. I said it from the start, Obama’s first priority should’ve been JOBS!

I just placed an order for some Eco friendly products from Green Irene. Once I test them in terms of reliability and cost I’m thinking about signing on to become a distributor of theirs…if you’ve had any experience with this firm, drop me a note to let me know what you think.

Don’t Do Drugs because if you do drugs you’ll go to prison, And drugs are really expensive in prison. – John Hardwick

The Healthier I Get…

After the income tax became law, WC Fields was audited by the newly formed IRS and was questioned about his writing off the use of gin as a business expense. When he was told he couldn’t do that, he quipped “the price of living just went up $2 a quart.” It seems we just can’t have any fun involving things we ‘used’ to like such as drinking and smoking (by the way, I quit six weeks ago).

According to a new study released last month, four common bad habits combined — smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet — can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests.

The study appears in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.

The healthiest group included never-smokers and those who had quit; teetotalers, women who had fewer than two drinks daily and men who had fewer than three; those who got at least two hours of physical activity weekly; and those who ate fruits and vegetables at least three times daily.

…and here I thought alcohol preserved you! I guess everything, except government largess, in moderation! One of the best, if not THE best family preparedness guides to have ever been published has been updated & includes online videos…Don’t Get Caught With Your Pantry Down by Stevens is now available through the Poor Man – see below for more information or to order. You will not be sorry!

Speaking of healthy…try this instant breakfast recipe instead of the store bought crap out there. I used to whip this up for my guests and they seemed to enjoy it (perhaps they were being polite).

Austrian Beauty Breakfast

Juice of 3 fresh oranges and/or pineapple juice

4 tablespoons of raw wheat germ

1 tsp of brewers yeast

1 banana

Honey to taste (I don’t like the taste of honey & find the fruit is sufficiently sweet)

1 tsp blackstrap molasses

1 tsp whey powder (optional)

4 sliced apricots – sun dried or fresh

Blend all ingredients for about 5 minutes and drink. Keeps well in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Grow food – not grass! Something we’re in the process of doing or as this site states…”10,000 pounds on 1/10th of an acre.” For most of us, moving to a small farm in order to become self sufficient just isn’t in the cards. Even with the down real estate market, open tracts of land in most parts of the country is still mighty expensive and cost of a start up farm and/or making it energy self sufficient is prohibitive.

The folks at this site present a journal of sorts of how they live a self sufficient life in the suburbs and you might find it of interest. The site is somewhat confusing to navigate at times, but it’s worth a look see.

Blogs that match manufacturer’s coupons with store coupons and sales from local supermarkets. Click on grocer deals at this site:

NOTE: Most warehouse clubs do not accept manufacturers coupons.  The exception is BJs. Although I’ve pushed using such clubs in the past, I’m not so sure anymore. High entry fees (average membership fee is now $45 or more) would discourage me from joining unless I was buying one hell of lot of stuff…most often, I can find the same deal elsewhere by checking sale prices. Consider making your purchases online as most of these outlets offer 80% more items on their sites.

Kind of a sneaky way to use these clubs without joining…if you know someone who does belong, give them some cash to buy you a warehouse gift card – you can use it to buy what you want and get the same deals as members without paying for a membership.

Generally, you’ll save a respectful buck when using their pharmacy, fuel stops or making alcohol purchases AND most offer free tech support for purchases of computers, TVs or other electronics – Costco automatically gives you a two-year warranty on all electronics you purchase from them!

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Alternate Transportation

Almost every municipality in the country is making a push for alternate modes of transportation.  More and more bike paths are being built.  Sidewalks are being widened.  Community shuttle buses are popping up in towns where car congestion and parking (or lack thereof) has reached critical mass and if you haven’t been on a public bus lately, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Leaving the car at home makes a whole lot of financial and environmental sense if you can manage it.  Here are nine alternative ways to make a short trip — to the store, to a friends’, to the beach, etc. and save. Read the rest here:

Student Explains Budget Cuts - ONLY 1 MIN 38 SEC.

This is short, simple, and ultimately disturbing. Everyone needs to understand this. This is not political, per se, but is the best illustration of economics I have seen as to what we can, and cannot, cut from the national budget, and how to illustrate the significance of what is proposed.

A college student "explains our Federal Budget" and the portion that must be borrowed in simple terms for everyone, plus his visual aid example easily demonstrates the $100 million cut that the President promised as savings.
Click on this link and be amazed. Watch it twice to enjoy the simplicity.  Then decide if it is time to write and call your Senator for a stop to deficit spending.

Collective Buying Service

Groupon is a collective buying discount service. Actually, that idea has been around in variations for years, both on and offline, but Groupon seems to have figured out how to make it simple and social.

Every day subscribers get one great deal offer for their community by way of email. Offers are from local businesses and are come with a price tag in order to earn a discount – something like $35 for an $80 massage. Groupon is working in about 30 cities currently, with near term plans to go to 80.

The offer doesn’t become good until some prescribed number of people elect to buy it. If a subscriber decides to buy the offer they often pass it along to friends to make sure the deal happens.

Learning How to Fight the Collector

Mr. Katz, a 58-year-old accountant in suburban Tucson, spends his free time schooling debtors on the finer points of consumer protection law to help them turn the tables on debt collectors. On occasion, he thumbs his own nose at them too.

“How many times can I sue you? Let me count the ways,” he wrote under his pseudonym, Dr. Tax, in a March posting on Inside ARM, a debt collectors’ Web site.

A former bill collector himself, Mr. Katz rebelled after a debt buyer damaged his credit score with what he says was a bogus bill. Mr. Katz sued, and in 2003 he collected his first damage award, a $1,000 check that he now keeps framed behind his desk.

New National ID Scam proposed by Democrats

WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- Civil liberties advocates decried a Democratic proposal that would require all workers in the United States to carry an ID card with biometric identifiers.

Senate Democratic leaders Thursday revealed an outline to reform U.S. immigration laws

, including a proposal requiring workers to carry a national card with biometric data, such as fingerprints, within six years.

Always an excuse using some BS “greater good logic.”

Majority Whip Sen.  Durbin, D-Ill., who worked on the outline and helped present it Thursday, said the public has become more comfortable with the idea of a national identification card.

"For a long time it was resisted by many groups but now we live in a world where we take off our shoes at the airport and pull out our identification," Durbin said. "People understand that in this vulnerable world we have to be able to present identification."

Like this will work…just like gun control kept guns out of the hands of criminals!  It’s just another control/power grab so they can keep a better eye on their serfs. The Poor Man has reported on this extensively in previous issues…you may recall that I suggested they will use the Nat’l Health program as a means of issuing national identity cards using our need for healthcare as subtefuge!

Entrepreneurs who want to put principles before profits—even after their companies go public—may soon have the legal cover to do just that, reports BusinessWeek.

On Apr. 13, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley signed a law creating legal entities known as “benefit corporations” and giving them greater protection from shareholder lawsuits. California and Vermont have similar bills in the works and legislators in at least three other states, including New York, are considering them. While many entrepreneurs applaud the measures, corporate governance experts worry about the rights of shareholders.

Interest in so-called socially responsible businesses by investors and entrepreneurs has grown in recent years. More than $2.7 trillion—about 11% of all assets under professional management—were in some kind of socially responsible investment in 2007, the latest data from Bloomberg show.

More than 30,000 U.S. companies are members of socially responsible or sustainable business organizations, according to B Lab, a Berwyn (Pa.) nonprofit that certifies businesses as socially responsible.

Under the new Maryland law, benefit corporations must spell out their values in their charters, report annually on activities that benefit the public, and submit to third-party auditing of their societal impact. Becoming a benefit corporation, or shedding that status, would require approval of two-thirds of shareholders.

Despite the stupidity of government officials in AZ…

Researchers have determined one way to help contain global warming is as simple as painting every rooftop white and roads too. US energy Secretary, Steven Chu discussed this proposal at a recent climate conference. I made the same suggestion (along with other suggestions) to then Gov. Janet Napalitano, now director of Homeland Insecurity.

Needless to say, they never responded to my proposals.

Government: More Incompetent than Ever

Most intellectuals support big government, and millions of people depend on it. So why, with thousands of laws, millions of employees working to carry out those laws, and trillions of dollars spent, is it in trouble?

The most popular big-government programs–like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid–are going broke. These entitlements account for more than half of annual federal spending. In 2009, spending on all federal entitlements exceeded all federal tax revenue. As Cato Institute economist Richard W. Rahn explained, this means “virtually all of the other government spending programs, including defense and interest payments on the debt, will be funded by more borrowing.” More at:

http://www.thefreemanonline.org/featured/government-more-incompetent-than-ever/?utm_source=The+Freeman&utm_campaign=5b6594e498-Freeman_May2010_Issue&utm_medium=email

If you think about it, it’s all about control!

Seldom do Americans have much say-so in how the government intrudes into our lives. We’re pretty much told “that’s the way it is and if you don’t like it, tough”! Freedom of choice has become a quaint, old-fashioned thought among leaders at the state and federal level.

I think of seat belt laws, anti-smoking bans, airport security rules, financial rules (you can’t open a bank account, take more than $5K in cash out of the country, open a foreign bank account, buy a money order over a certain amount, etc. etc. without the government knowing about it).

We are the most heavily regulated society on the planet and because of that, the most heavily controlled in a “democratic country.” After all, the more laws created, the more lawbreakers there are. The average American breaks 21 laws a week, often without realizing it. The more laws, the more control and often the more revenue skimmed from your pocket via the courts or regulatory agencies.

Like good sheep, we all go along with the program in the name of some ‘greater good,” such as protecting the children, controlling social behavior, protecting our health, and blah, blah, blah.

Seldom is any thought of compromise given in legislation or achieving some kind of middle ground – it’s always a sledge hammer approach. Smoking bans are a good example…why can’t businesses, especially bars and clubs create non-smoking areas within reason – after all, no one is forced to go to a casino, nightclub or restaurant.

Our ruling class would not want you to exercise any freedom of choice that’s why. It allows them another means of grabbing your money in the form of fines.

I knew a white guy from South Africa, who immigrated to the U.S., who used to put "African-American" on all the forms. I sympathize with his desire to mess with stupid social expectations by putting square pegs in round holes.

IRA and 401(k) De-Privatization
The Poor Man Warned of this…

Every crime has a motive. It's not just ideology but practicality that drives our ruling politicians to seek control over large pools of private wealth. The harsh reality of national insolvency is forcing this danger to the forefront.

Washington is readying confiscatory revenue-raising subterfuge because the funding crisis for Social Security is no longer something that can wait to be dealt with years down the road. Congress has been stealing from this ‘trust’ fund for decades, using federal IOUs to screw the American public.

As the New York Times reported, "This year, the system will pay out more in benefits than it receives in payroll taxes, an important threshold it was not expected to cross until at least 2016, according to the Congressional Budget Office." The trickle of red ink will soon become a flood under the pressure of 78 million retiring Baby Boomers.

The herding of the investing public into investments of the government's choosing has begun. As Bob Chapman of The International Forecaster explains, "The looting of retirement plans is still in the planning stage, and you're seeing these trial balloons go up."

The March 9 edition of Business Week notes that new federal regulations designed to "promote the conversion of 401(k) savings and Individual Retirement Accounts into annuities or other steady payment streams" would help drive cash into government-controlled entities such as American International Group (AIG), which was bailed out to the tune of $182.3 billion.

Always makes me wonder as to how much of my millions I should put into gold, silver or Chinese currency?

Neat idea department…

CNNMoney.com:

Mario Batali decided last year to install a garden between his adjoining West Hollywood restaurants, Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza. But a plain old backyard patch wouldn’t do. Batali wanted something more visually striking, something more … vertical? So he turned to Jim Mumford, the owner of Good Earth Plant and Flower Company in San Diego.

Mumford, 52, had built a reputation as a nontraditional gardener. In March 2007, he embarked on a “giant experiment,” replacing the 1,800-square-foot roof of a commercial building he owned with a planter’s paradise: three inches of specialized, lightweight soil over a padded waterproofing and drainage system. Now, 46 varieties of plants thrive there, alongside footpaths and faux boulders.

5 Ways to Simplify Your Life

And Save Money!

“Norm! How’s life in the fast lane? Don’t know, I can’t even find the on ramp!”

--Cheers TV Sitcom

Not enough time, not enough money, not enough space…it’s amazing that we live in a time of history with more time-saving devices and we all cry “we don’t have enough time.”

Since the late 1970s, most Americans were bitten by the affluenza bug. We all wanted more…bigger houses, designer label clothes, flashier cars and all of the latest electronic gadgets. Did having “it all” improve your happiness? Did it improve the upbringing of your children? Was your self-worth higher using the materialist yardstick?

Were you living like our government – beyond its means? Did each pay raise or IRS refund send you on a spending spree to acquire more stuff? Have you found yourself working hard only to discover there is no gold watch at retirement and Wall Street lost most or all of your investments?

“Future shock – the shattering stress and disorientation that we induce in individuals by subjecting them to too much change in too short a time.”

--Alvin Toffler, Future Shock, 1970

Perhaps your world has been turned upside down due to recent economic events. It’s our belief, our nation will never return to its spendthrift ways. Therefore, our philosophy has always been one of voluntary simplicity. You can live well on less AND probably derive more enjoyment from life for you and your family.

Here are five ways to simplify your life:

  • Stop Working. Perhaps not feasible for all, but consider if you’re a two-income family with children in daycare, it might be cheaper for one of you to stay at home. Potential savings include an average of $800-$1200 a month in daycare costs. You won’t require expensive business clothing. You won’t be roped into making those office donations for everything from retirement parties to other gifts. You may not need a second vehicle. You won’t be eating out as much either.
  • Buy Used. You’ll be amazed at what new or near new items you can find at thrift stores including furniture, clothing and kitchen items. Buy late model used cars as opposed to new. An automobile is a depreciating asset, which loses money the minute you drive off the lot.
  • Do it Yourself. I once called an appliance repair person to fix our clothes drier. Indeed, after several promises to show up, I fixed the darn thing myself with a little online help and saved $75. The library, online services and a knowledgeable neighbor or relative can provide the information you need to fix most things (I repair my computer but avoid new car engines; but do have a reliable friend who fixes my car at half the price of a shop).
  • Stop Expensive Gift Giving. My previous wife spent an average of $12,000 annually on gifts (one of the reasons we’re no longer married). Your 10-year-old-son, for instance, does not need a $100 cell phone and expensive contract. Learn to make your own gifts or provide small amount gift cards. One year, for example, we made custom gift baskets for the holidays for everyone our list. The baskets were purchased at the thrift shop for a buck or two and we filled each with food and other items that were appropriate to each person (most of the gourmet food stocks were purchased at a dollar store).
  • Grow a Garden. Nothing beats the tasteless vegetables from the store like homegrown. Where we live the soil is bad and it’s too hot…but container gardening works well. Gardening is also a fine way to relax and sooth the mood.

Affluenza is a tough temptation, so cut up the credit cards too. Keep one for emergencies and only for emergencies. Become a member of your library and check out books and DVDs for home entertainment. Check the sites below for more information.

Last time I checked there was nothing in WalMart made in the USA. I don't need a new car or aircraft, or tank or any of the military stuff that is still being produced here. Business in the US is not loyal to us, they are loyal to the bottom line and US companies pay to build manufacturing facilities in China, India, etc. Politicians, bankers and labor unions act as if they want to destroy the American middle class. – Jack>>>reader from AZ

Little wonder our President defers to the Chinese leader. The Treasury Department’s monthly Treasury International Capital report was just released and it shows China with $877.5 billion in long-term Treasury debt. Even worse, the Obama administration needs the Chinese government to buy part of the estimated $2.4 trillion in Treasury debt that Washington must sell off this year.

The Obama administration is praying that the Communists will waddle-up and buy hundreds of more billions of dollars in Uncle Sam IOUs. So far things are not panning out. In February China trimmed its holdings of United States Treasury debt by 1.3 percent, the fourth consecutive decline.

Companies with Telecommuting Programs

The companies on this list are pioneers in the area of telecommuting. There are large and small companies in the private and public sectors. The jobs included in the telecommuting programs are as varied as the companies themselves. This list IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE! Everyday new companies are recruiting or allowing employees to work at home. What Part of Illegal Don’t they understand?

Mexico City – As Mexicans decry the Arizona immigration law and launch boycotts of Arizona, Amnesty International released a scathing new report urging Mexicans to look in the mirror.

“Invisible Victims: Migrants on the Move in Mexico” details the abuse faced by Central American migrants, who cross the southern border between Guatemala and Mexico, usually en route to the US.

Each year, tens of thousands of migrants make the trip.

Many lose limbs from accidents on trains they board to head northward. Women and girls report sexual violence. And - far worse than asking suspected illegal immigrants about their US immigration status, as the new Arizona law will require police to do - many Central American migrants to Mexico accuse Mexican officials of demanding bribes or flat-out stealing their cash. More at: http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20100428/wl_csm/297614

These so called ‘rights groups’ invest in fear & hate mongering

The law is the result of festering frustration over the failure of Obama -- and George W. Bush before him -- to enforce immigration law and protect the border.

Phoenix is a war zone, as immigrant smugglers and drug lords kidnap, rob and murder. Up to a half-million illegal immigrants are squatting in Arizona, draining resources and stealing jobs.

The embattled people of the state have asked for a wall. They've asked that federal troops patrol the border. They've pleaded for a crackdown on businesses employing unauthorized workers. They've got nothing but the promise that Washington will someday deliver a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

The advocates for illegals need to get a life & instead, show them the legal method of immigration. America is held to an impossible standard of behavior that no other country expects of any other country. The Poor Man wrote on this extensively late last year. Mexico knows full well the US is a great outlet for its poor…let the norte Americanos pay for medical, food and schooling so we don’t have too.

Saving America from Wall Street & Big Government

NOTE: Guest editorial - slightly condensed version from Whiskey & Gunpowder.

As America sinks deeper into the tyranny of bureaucratic corporatism via today's incestuous relationship between Washington and Wall Street, it is inspiring to see thousands of Tea Parties spring up to express outrage. Unfortunately the "new deal" campaign approach still works as it has been malefically doing for over 70 years since FDR came to visit us. Every election season artful political pitchmen hit the airwaves to call for "change" and "more prosperity for the people," in which millions get swept up.

The promise of change is, of course, a con. Legitimate change from the burden of big government would necessitate a move toward smaller government. But this is not what the statist mentalities have in mind when they preach change. They wield the word "change" as a shrewd angler wields an alluring fly. It's a deceptive hook that works because much of humanity is always looking to get more out of life than it is willing to put in. Both Democratic and Republican regimes realize this. Consequently both promise the voters more entitlements, more pork, more privileges.

Our schools, our churches, our publishers, and our entertainment industries are being infested with the serpents of Cultural Marxism. Political correctness dominates the herd mentalities and philistines who overwhelm the perceptive and productive at the polls every other November.

Allowing our leaders to get away with this kind of political-economic quackery is what the novelist Ayn Rand meant in Atlas Shrugged when she spoke of the "sanction of the victim" being the harbinger of dictatorship. It is what Aldous Huxley meant in Brave New World Revisited when he wrote that a "really efficient totalitarian state" would be comprised of "a population of slaves who do not have to be coerced because they love their servitude." They have been taught to love it b y society's reigning intellectuals in the schools, the churches, and the media.

Signs of Hope

Yet despite the insidious decadence confronting us at every turn, there are signs of hope, significant signs of an awakening desire to face up to the truth -- in other words, to face the root causes of our problems.

The response to the Ron Paul campaign was the first such sign. The Tea Party revolts were the next sign. And now we are beginning to see a few intrepid MSM pundits speak openly about the corporate-statist collusion of Washington and Wall Street and its connection to our economic problems. The reason why this is grounds for optimism is that if ever MSM catches on and begins to venture out from the "politically correct" statist herd, then the jig is up for the corporate-statist authoritarians and their Machiavellian hold over us.

A promising example of the new MSM intrepidity can be found in a recent 12-minute report, The Great Con Job, by Dylan Ratigan on MSNBC. This is a powerful attack upon the banking / bureaucratic con game that has been orchestrated over the past 15-20 years in America. Ratigan is one of MSM's more fearless TV journalists. How deeply he grasps the root causes of our political-economic problems I don't know. It is doubtful that he has connected the dots all the way back through the fraudulency of Keynesian economics and FDR in the 1930s, and then to 1913 where the root causes were laid for America's destruction with the inception of the Federal Reserve and the progressive income tax. But Ratigan is sharp and amazingly articulate, and he has demonstrated throughout his career that he will not play lackey to the establishment as 90% of his journalistic brethren are doing.

We must remember that the Berlin Wall did finally fall. The monster state of the Soviet Union came crashing down with it -- all because the ideological monopoly (which must always precede any political monopoly and dictatorship) became impossible for the communists in the Politburo to maintain. The ideological / political monopoly here in the West is not the same kind as that which plagued the USSR. Ours is voluntarily accepted by the journalistic and political players, rather than coercively enforced through legislation and police suppression. Our submission is more of what Rand and Huxley wrote about 50 years ago. It has been ingrained into us through intellectual sophistry over the decades in the schools and then reinforced by a compliant priesthood and media. Thus it will be more difficult to discredit because it is self-imposed. But unlike the Soviet patriots, we have the Internet which will help immensely.

The Ratigan Report is a very hopeful start toward building that awareness among the intelligentsia that is necessary for statism to be thwarted. Dictatorial government cannot be brought down without such an awareness among the perceptive and independent of the populace. The herd will do as it always has done throughout history -- obey its masters. But the rebels, the doers, the dissidents are a breed apart.

A Grassroots Uprising

This awareness can be built into a major grassroots uprising throughout America. This is what I have written about in The Conservative Revolution: Why We Must Form a Third Political Party to Win It. The oppressive rule of the statist elites cannot maintain itself if we will muster the backbone to stand up to it. But this will take a far more rational approach than the present level of political activism in America. It will take an exposition of the root causes of our despotism, which are the institutions of infamy enacted into law in 1913 -- the Federal Reserve and the progressive income tax. But most importantly, it will take an effective third-party political strategy that can circumvent the corporate-statist elites and their control over our two major parties in America.

Such a plan is outlined in The Conservative Revolution, and is the foundation of the newly formed Conservative American Party. It is called the "Two Pillars Strategy." It is a unique, never before envisioned approach to politics that will go to the root of our problems and bring back sanity to our country. The key to its success will be its genuine reform of our tax and monetary systems. It will lower tax rates to 10% for everyone, simplify tax preparation to 10 minutes every April, neuter the Fed, and reduce inflation to zero. The "Two Pillars" reform plan will bring back millions of jobs from overseas, dramatically restore the productivity of our nation, and because of the way the tax plan is designed, it will stop the growth of the Federal Government cold and begin its automatic reduction.

A second key to the plan's success will be because of its universal appeal, the "Two Pillars Strategy" will easily get the Conservative American Party 15% in the polls, which will qualify it's candidate for the National TV Presidential Debates. This will get a vital third voice -- a true limited government voice -- in front of 70 million voters that can challenge the corruption and obtuseness of our two major parties. This has never been done in the 48-year history of the debates. It will electrify the country.

Conventional pundits scorn the concept of a third-party as "unworkable in America," but they are oblivious to the two major mistakes of "marginalization" and "cloning" that all third-parties have made for the past 150 years, which when corrected will allow a third-party to succeed. The Two Pillars Strategy corrects these two major mistakes. The Conservative Revolution demonstrates that a third political party (espousing freedom and headed by a candidate with gravitas) can indeed work, and that those who think otherwise are immersed in a fallacious darkness that is greatly contributing to the stultification of America.

Is this all a pipe dream, "delusional rantings of reactionaries that refuse to accept modernity," as the leftist establishment will surely try to portray it? Not at all. It is a thoroughly researched, powerfully designed, revolutionary plan to take back America starting in 2012 with the two pillars of tax and monetary reform, combined with two additional pillars of immigration and foreign policy reform. Eminent scholars and pundits have endorsed the "Two Pillars Plan." A 90-minute documentary is presently being made about it by the acclaimed film maker, James Jaeger, of Matrix Entertainment. It’s titled Spoiler: How a Third Political Party Could Succeed. To give the reader an idea of the exciting potential here, Jaeger's film, Fiat Empire, has been viewed by over 5 million people. If we can get the same numbers for Spoiler, the Demopublican establishment and their destructive grip over America will be ended.   http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5232639329002339531#

In a front page USA TODAY article, Tuesday, April 20, 2010, Richard Wolf writes that, "The nation's fastest-growing political party is 'none of the above'….For the first time since Gallup started asking in 1992, both major parties are viewed unfavorably by most Americans. Nearly four in 10 voters call themselves independents, Gallup says."

It is from this rising sea of discontented independents (40% of the electorate), combined with fed up Republicans and Democrats (probably another 20%), that the impetus will come for the third-party revolution necessary to save America. All it takes is 35% of the vote to win in a three man race.

If we as citizens want to stop the runaway freight train of debt and delusion that is consuming our myopic politicians in Washington, if we want to stop the suicidal immigration policies and imperialistic militarism that are destroying the last vestiges of the American Republic, then we must challenge the monopoly that corporate-statists have over our politics. We must open up the system by injecting a rational third voice into the process.

Breaking the Monopoly

Democrats and Republicans will not tell the truth to voters; they are bought off by the corporate-statists. Our schools will not tell the truth; they are controlled by the corporate-statists. Our media will not tell the truth; they are owned by the corporate-statists. Only a third political party can break this monopolistic grip. But it has to be a REAL third-party that can garner the necessary 15% in the polls so as to qualify for the National TV Presidential Debates where it can forcefully contest the philosophical fraud and political perfidy of the Demopublicans in front of 70 million viewers. This, the Conservative American Party can do because its revolutionary "Two Pillars Strategy" will circumvent the two flaws that have doomed all conventional third-parties for the past 150 years.

Imagine Ron Paul (representing Constitutional conservatism) and Patrick Buchanan (representing cultural conservatism) -- one as Presidential candidate and the other as Vice-President -- on a Conservative American Party ticket in 2012. Imagine them confronting the Democratic-Republican monopoly in front of 70 million viewers on nationwide TV during the 2012 Presidential debates. Imagine them giving half-hour lectures on the major TV networks prior to each of the three debates like Ross Perot did in 1992. Imagine a Paul / Buchanan ticket campaigning throughout the heartland. It would inspire conservatives, libertarians, independents, blue dog Democrats, and Tea Parties everywhere. Imagine the potential! They wouldn't win, but they could launch a true patriot party that could win in the next two election cycles. What's important is that the restoration of the Republic could begin in 2012. The ground is being laid right now. A passionate book has been written, and a galvanizing film is being shot.

Detroit Looks Like a War Zone

Last Sunday Dateline aired a report on Detroit hosted by Chris Wallace, an area native. It’s worse than I thought, although I must admit, I avoid Detroit (I even avoid their airport when possible). A few weeks ago I reported on a plan to literally bulldoze about a 40 square mile are of the city. After viewing the report, I’m more in favor of that concept. The city has been abandoned over the decades by the auto industry and most white people, leaving it to gangs (both street and political) to fight over the carcass.

Detroit, in many ways, is a snapshot of what is wrong with the country. Political vultures more interested in lining their pocket rather than serving the people they were elected to help. Corporations don’t give a damn about their community and ship jobs to Mexico or China (their excuse is cheaper labor, but it’s rare to see lower prices, especially with cars).

Speaking of cars.  Want to make a quick buck? Used cars are scarce in the Motor City as people are hanging onto them longer and asking high prices for them. Auto ads in the area feature primarily new cars or very late model cars at inflated prices.

Quick buck II – No doubt you’ve heard about the early retirement program for attorneys called the class action lawsuit but did you know you might be entitled to some free stuff as a result of those proceedings? In many instances, the losing business must repay customers through freebies or discounted merchandise and services. Check this free site to learn more about these settlements:

Tips, Tricks, Resources, Money Savers

  • Refrigerators are usually the most energy hungry appliance in the home. If your fridge is more than 10 years old, might be wise to replace it, View the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy which offers ratings. www.acee.org
  • More than 200,000 Americans traveled abroad for healthcare last year. Cost of care abroad is usually a fraction of US costs. Example: A heart bypass here costs an average of $125,000 while in New Zealand, it is only $38,000. Dental work in Mexico is dramatically cheaper than Arizona (7 miles west of Yuma in Los Algodones, there are 350 practicing dentists who speak English and charge 70% less)…500,000 Americans visited India for treatment; 410,000 went to Singapore. Most foreign doctors are trained here. The average cost for full health insurance in Costa Rica is about $95 a month for two adults (again, US trained doctors). Resources: www.medretreat.com, www.medicalnomad.com, www.patientswithoutborders.us

  • Free office tools – get free invoicing at billingboss.com, custom software and tools from Google Pack, pack.google.com, free customer relation management software at freecrm.com or www.getdoorbell.com
  • Find out what auto repairs really cost at: www.RepairPal.com
  • Turn snacks into money. Raise money for your school or favorite charity by recycling. Sign up for free at TerraCycle.net, and you can collect yogurt cups, candy wrappers, cookie packages and more & use their pre-paid postage to send them in.
  • Find more free software (reliable) at: CNET – www.download.cnet.com
  • Win $50,000 savings bond for your child – Got any young scholars at home in grades 5-8? Visit YoungScientistChallenge.com – it will show them how to create a short video varied science concepts for a chance to win one of 51 regional prizes, one of 10 trips to NYC & the chance to compete in the finals for the $50K. Deadline is 5/27/2010
  • Keep flashlights ready to use…batteries, when stored in your flashlight will drain so store them with one battery turned around so it doesn’t make contact.
  • Stuck without a D battery? Put a C battery in the slot and add 3-5 quarters to mimic the size of a D.
  • Make a mini greenhouse by saving the clear plastic containers with attached lids you get from the salad bar or supermarket to serve as a hothouse for seeds you start indoors. Fill halfway with potting soil & add seeds and water. Put the lid down and set in a sunny windowsill until the seeds begin to sprout.

News Roundup

The remedy is often worse than the disease…

"Politics has poisoned the well."

Poll: 4 out of 5 Americans don't trust Washington

America's "Great Compromiser" Henry Clay called government "the great trust," but most Americans today have little faith in Washington's ability to deal with the nation's problems.

Public confidence in government is at one of the lowest points in a half century, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center. Nearly 8 in 10 Americans say they don't trust the federal government and have little faith it can solve America's ills, the survey found.

Rumor Control Sites Provide the Facts

In a given week, Snopes tries to set the record straight on everything from political smears to old wives’ tales. No, Kenya did not erect a sign welcoming people to the “birthplace of Barack Obama.” No, Wal-Mart did not authorize illegal immigration raids at its stores. No, the Olive Garden restaurant chain did not hand out $500 gift cards to online fans.

Snopes is one of a small handful of sites in the fact-checking business. Brooks Jackson, the director of one of the others, the politically oriented FactCheck.org, believes news organizations should be doing more of it. Put them on your favorites!

The Top Five Consumer Problems and How to Avoid Them

If you know where potential problems lie, they should be avoidable. That’s the apparent logic behind the Federal Trade Commission’s Report of Top Consumer Complaints. Every Spring, the FTC puts out a list of the top reported sources of consumer problems. But it normally doesn’t get a lot of national media attention, and that’s too bad. Because if we all took the time to understand the problems represented on this list, we’d be much less likely to become victims. For the full list, go to:

After spending two years clipping and saving through the use of coupons, Kasey Trenum and Kelly Thompson have started teaching others how to do what they do through day long workshops, says the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

The Time 2 Save workshops teach the concept of creating a pantry stockpile by buying enough of an item while it is at its lowest price, then waiting until the item goes on sale again 10 to 12 weeks later to replenish the stock.

“Right now, when you need to go to the grocery store, you make a list then you go, but you’re tied to your list,” Mrs. Trenum explained. “Now whether salad dressing is $3 or whether it’s $1.99, if you need it, you buy it.

“I buy it when it’s 19 cents and I don’t buy it again until it goes on sale, and that’s the way our bill is like $30.”

The appeal of saving money led Flintstone, Ga., resident Tammy Thompson — who isn’t related to Kelly Thompson — to attend a workshop in early February. The 42-year-old said she knew she was about to lose her job and she needed to find a way to save money.

Since taking the course, Tammy Thompson said she has saved “a tremendous amount of money” and has a new perspective on the grocery store. Before the class, she didn’t keep many groceries inside her home and would instead eat out with her husband for almost every meal.

She said her husband was skeptical at first, but after seeing their grocery bill cut in half and the abundance of food now in the house, he’s just as excited as she is.

She said she has gone shopping twice since the class, and both times her bill was about $75 to $80 for two weeks’ worth of food, plus stockpile items.

Abused by a Debt Collector? Get a Free Lawyer

Owning more than you can pay is bad enough. Being badgered, hounded and abused by a debt collector can make your life a living hell.

But if you ever find yourself harassed with dozens of phone calls daily, here’s something you should know. You don’t deserve to be treated like a doormat nor should you tolerate it. More important, if your legal rights are being violated, you might qualify for free legal help to make it stop.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act stipulates what third-party debt collectors can and can’t do when trying to collect. In 2009, the FTC received almost 120,000 complaints about third-party debt collectors: an increase of nearly 50% from 2008. The two most common complaints were phone harassment (34.7%) and obscene, profane or abusive language (13.5%), both violations of the law. And the FTC is taking violations seriously. For example, just yesterday they issued this press release about a million dollar fine levied against one national collection agency.

What should you do if you’re being bullied? First, meet someone who took the bull by the horns: Michelle Vizzini. This Philadelphia woman woke up one morning to find her bank account frozen at the hands of a debt collector for a 13 year old debt she says she doesn’t owe. More at: http://www.moneytalksnews.com/2010/03/03/dealing-with-debt-collectors/

Parting Thoughts & Cheap Shots

Cheap Credit Ending for Americans?!

Even as prospects for the American economy brighten, consumers are about to face a new financial burden: a sustained period of rising interest rates.

That, economists say, is the inevitable outcome of the nation’s ballooning debt and the renewed prospect of inflation as the economy recovers from the depths of the recent recession.

The shift is sure to come as a shock to consumers whose spending habits were shaped by a historic 30-year decline in the cost of borrowing.

“Americans have assumed the roller coaster goes one way,” said Bill Gross, whose investment firm, Pimco, has taken part in a broad sell-off of government debt, which has pushed up interest rates. “It’s been a great thrill as rates descended, but now we face an extended climb due to our ballooning deficit and out-of-control government spending binge.

But I do ask myself, when was credit ever cheap? With the possible exception of mortgages, credit card interest rates were always exceptionally high – beyond usury or even Mafia rates.

With the end of cheap credit comes the end of our economy as we knew it, consumer excess will probably vanish and as I reported in previous issues…there will be a rise in use of barter, land contracts, community currency, etc. Indeed, many citizens are preparing to leave the US as indicated in a recent survey…

Record Number of Americans Ready to Flee

In a survey of readers on March 22, 2010, InternationalLiving.com
found that nearly 96% of respondents said they are more likely to move out of the United States than they were last year.

More than 500,000 readers of the company’s free Daily E-letter were asked a single question: Are you more open to moving outside the United States than you were 12 months ago?

A stunning 95.6% of those who responded said they were now more willing to make the move and leave the U.S. Sort of an OFFSHORING of ourselves. Hell, Wall Street doesn’t want any US consumers of their goods anyhow.

I know you’ve heard all of us encourage everyone to stockpile silver US coins and/or gold but even precious metals markets are being manipulated by Wall Street and other speculators…watch for oil to continue climbing despite lower US consumption so as I always say – it’s time for another revolution folks!

Vice is the spice of life! --Unknown

Sin, Vice, Black Market & the Undergound Economy

Several years ago, a friend of mine was shot six times at close range with a .22 caliber pistol after leaving his place of business about 5am – he survived. He and his wife ran a speakeasy or after-hours gambling and drinking establishment.

Although he was able to joke about the event during my visits with him in the hospital, it brought home the dangers of participating in the underground economy. Most folks associate the underground economy with vice of some sort and that’s a pretty accurate statement but not always. I have another friend who sold pirated copies of movies to a private list of buyers, not nearly as dangerous.

Annual revenues from off-the-book activities range from $650 billion to as much as $1.5 trillion dollars and as the economy worsens for many, that figure will only grow. The government never leaned its lesson from Prohibition when dozens of street hoodlums became incredibly wealthy by smuggling booze. Once Prohibition ended, liquor sales in this country actually fell (much to the chagrin of one smuggler whose son became President).

Study after study has shown the underground economy always grows whenever governments increase taxes and/or regulations. The underground economy is growing in Europe as well. For example, due to insanely high tobacco taxes, terrorists are now finding it profitable to smuggle cigarettes – thank you Uncle Scam.

As the economy tanks and middle class jobs and wages vanish, there isn’t much choice for many people - allowing this true form of free enterprise to expand further. Most decent paying jobs are never coming back. Use of barter and alternative currencies will also continue to grow.

Take this as a reminder that our Poor Man CD Rom contains a terrific ebook on 45 Ways to Make a Living-Without a Job. You can order it at our site.

A Primer on Becoming Prepared…Down & Dirty Guide

  1. A 4 week food reserve Why? If your bank closes down, or you are snowed in, or roads are closed for rioting for a while, you’re not left hungry from the inability to get to the store.

    2. A 30-60 day stock of any essential medications you or a family member needs Why? Same as item 1. Additionally, you risk needing a refill precisely when the doctor is on vacation or the pharmacy is closed. Another advantage of a larger supply is that buying in bulk saves money per dose.

    3. Heat source other than your gas or electric items. Why? Same as item 1.

    4. At least $1,000 cash stashed in your home. Why? Same as reasons one, two and three, but for yet another reason as well. Imagine another banking system virus that shuts down ATMs (already happened in 2003 due to a Microsoft Worm).

    5. At least a week of water / juice / hydration Why? If your municipal water is contaminated, pipes are broken due to an earthquake, or if the construction crew was careless and cracked your pipe and the city cant afford to fix it for a while, you arent left high and literally dry.

    6. Next size up of essential clothes like jackets, underwear, and one pair of shoes for kids. Also have 2-3 packs of next size up diapers for babies. Why? Kids grow. (If not, see a doctor.) Unfortunately, we often dont realize that theyve literally outgrown their britches until something breaks. If you have a spare next size up jacket, you dont find the dual emergency of a child too large for the jacket they had and not being able to get to the store or having the money to get another one. And the shock of not being able to fasten a clean diaper on Junior while stranded at home is not an emergency if you have a stash of the next size up on hand.

    7. Spare glasses and other medical equipment Why? If your only pair of glasses breaks, you may find yourself both blind for lack of another pair and too strapped for cash / credit to get another pair. So have at least one spare pair of eyeglasses on hand. The same goes for hearing aid batteries, wheel chairs for those who are mobility impaired, and other medical equipment a family member is dependent on. This prevents the theft of such an item or its damage or simple wearing out from becoming both a health disaster and financial one. If you have the spare on hand, use the spare and search for options for a new one at leisure.

    8. Car maintenance emergency stock Why? If your car can’t go, neither will you. Have a gasoline can or gasoline substitute on hand. Car oil, other car fluids, and a spare battery can also be life- savers.

    9. Pay off all of your secured debt. Why? Car loans are between five and ten percent right now. You cannot get that rate of return in the stock market, and you cannot afford to pay those debts when unemployed or during high inflation. So pay it off now.

If you own your car out right, you do not have to worry about repossession if money becomes tight. If you own your cars, pay off your house. Late, lost or stopped credit card payments ding your credit score. Late, lost or stopped house payments can lead to foreclosure. These literally physical investments can prevent a sudden need from become both a financial and personal emergency. Consider it an investment in your personal security and sanity.

Consumers using credit cards online: Be wary of retailers that attempt to blacklist you

The Fair Credit Billing Act allows cardholders to dispute charges that they had previously agreed to pay. When this happens, the credit card company investigates and decides whether the company or the consumer is in the right. Much to retailers' dismay, the credit card companies generally defer to consumers who seem like they're on the up-and-up and don't make a habit of requesting charge-backs.

That's not how Brian Heideman sees it. He's president and chief executive of BadCustomer.com, a Santa Monica, Calif., firm that bills itself as "The Net's Largest Shared Database Of Charge-back Risks – See more at:

Here are three steps you can take to join the freecycling movement.

1. Find a freecycling group near you at Recycling Group Finder. If you can't find a group near you, consider starting one, either on your own or through organizations like the ReUseIt Network, FreeMesa.org, The Freeuse Network, FreeSharing.org, Sharing Is Giving or The Freecycle Network. Freecycling works best when the group members live geographically close because it's more convenient and uses less energy when stuff is exchanged.

2. Each freecycle group will have its own rules, so learn and abide by those rules. But commonly there are four kinds of posts: Wanted is you searching for an item; Found is telling others that you got what you were searching for; Offer is letting the group know what item you have to give away; and Taken is informing the group that you found a person who needed the item offered.

3. Before buying something, check to see if any one in your group is looking to get rid of the item you need. Before throwing an item in the trash, post an offer for the item to see if any one needs that item.

The Art Swapping

I’m planning to host a swap exchange in late May. My kickoff event will be a community wide garage sale coming in the middle of that month. We have enough room to host a dozen families who wish to sell their items with plenty of parking (no charge). We thought about selling hot dogs & burgers but were warned the food police will slap us with a fine for doing so without a food vendors permit (typical pinheaded bereautwit), so we’ll ask for donations instead.

We’ll ask those interested to sign up & provide an email address. Several weeks prior to the event, we’ll send out a notice promoting the date & time. We’ll also lay out the ground rules including how many items someone can bring, what kind of condition it should be in, what can participants take home. We’ll use a point system to value the goods from 1-4 with number 4 being the most valuable. These rules will also be posted around the event as a reminder to everyone.

If you don’t have the room, consider approaching your church or community center. We’ll have help from friends to organize and host the event and to keep track of points and tickets. Leftovers will be donated to charity. After the event, we plan to have a picnic with everyone bringing a dish and we’ll provide the beverages.

You can set up the same in your area and many swaps include skill exchanges ranging from haircuts, massages, baking cakes, accounting work, lawn mowing, etc. It’s best to establish the value of your swap in advance so when you approach another person so both parties know upfront if it’s a good deal.

If it works out, we’ll try to establish an area barter network…probably using Yahoo Groups to set up a free exchange much like FreeCycle.net and other groups.

As always, we welcome your suggestions and input. Laissez nous faire

Designer Duds

When I was a kid if we got a pair of Levi jeans, we thought we were pretty cool. There weren’t many other ‘designer duds’ that I can recall from back then, although my Dad’s friends used to wear something with an alligator on it whenever they went golfing. So how did most of us go from hand-me-downs and jeans or maybe a pair of Keds shoes to $150 sneakers that kids are willing to kill over? (By the way, the Keds brand still exists).

When my two boys were growing up, their mother bought them everything designer label. I once asked her about why she would spend 20% or more on a name vs. function.  Her response, ‘designer labels are better made.’ My former spouse was much like many other shopaholics. We were clearing $5-8,000 a month and she thought nothing of dropping $500 on a blouse at Saks 5th Avenue. Everything for the kids had to be a designer label; there was no generic anything in our household. Personally, all I could think of were those 3rd-world sweatshops that robbed America of its garment industry and how Madison Avenue conned us into buying cheaply made, overpriced goods.

The paradox to this however, is how poorly the average American dresses, despite the tons of cash spent on clothes each year. I don’t care if it’s the theatre, an airline seat, a church seat, most people look like slobs…especially the guys. Of course, I always find it so attractive when you see overweight high school girls who think they look cool in a tank top and jeans with their thong and gut hanging out!

In many ways, most of us have become new consumers though. You really don’t have to spend money to have a good time or to cook a good meal. Nothing like some hard times to make us eat a little humble pie.

News & Views

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 48 states face shortfalls in their budgets for fiscal year 2010 that total $196 billion or 29% of state budgets — the largest gaps on record.

Experts say 10 states are bordering on insolvency — along with California and Illinois, other states in the hot seat including Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. They are all in the soup, financially. And in 2011, many states face revenue gaps as big as or bigger than the ones they are wrestling with this year.

The Kinetic Vehicle…Is it legal?

This is MAX, which stands for Mother's Automotive eXperiment. No, we're not done with it. It needs a streamlined body, for one thing, since we're shooting for 100 miles per gallon. The engine is a turbocharged 1100cc Kubota diesel, and and even sans streamlining MAX is surprisingly peppy. Peppy enough to win the inaugural Escape from Berkeley race in October '08 (Berkeley to Las Vegas without petroleum fuel) thanks to good performance, great mileage, and the ability to run on cooking oil straight out of the bottle. We intend to run the same team in April 2010, when Escape from Berkeley will take us from Berkeley to Mexico; Yours Truly behind the wheel and Sharon Wescott behind the map...unless by some fluke we get a diesel motorcycle whipped together for Sharon, in which case we'll be calling for volunteers in the right seat. Click here to read all about the MAX project or here to just read about MAX this year.

White House braces unemployed for slow job rebound

Gasoline prices today are lower than the highs of July 2008, but they are higher than they were in 2009. Analysts point to recent growing demand for oil that has led to higher prices, and they continue to debate the point at which oil production might peak over the next decade…If you’ve read some of my posts from last year or earlier, you’ll recall that I suggested ending Saturday mail delivery – not to save the post office anything, but to reduce the amount of fuel consumed in the US.

The government is by far the largest consumer of fuel in this country and in most cases, they are not fuel efficient. Another area of government inefficiency often overlooked…too few local municipalities know how to properly time traffic signals, leading to a horrendous waste of gasoline through constant stop and go driving.

H.L. Mencken’s classic warning… “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed—and hence clamorous to be led to safety—by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

Survivalism in the Suburbs

Yahoo Finance! reported that a new trend is coming out of chaotic California: ‘Crisis spurs spike in ‘suburban survivalists’. “Six months ago, Jim Wiseman didn’t even have a spare nutrition bar in his kitchen cabinet. Now, the 54-year-old businessman and father of five has a backup generator, a water filter, a grain mill and a 4-foot-tall pile of emergency food tucked in his home in the expensive San Diego suburb of La Jolla.”

If Mr. Wiseman really needs his various preparations then what would the probability be that the area he is in is experiencing massive civil unrest, supply chain disruptions, gang warfare and a host of other undesirable effects?

Often when thinking of disaster preparation people get a little extreme, do not accurately assess the probability of events, focus on fairly immaterial questions like how to buy gold or silver and neglect the more important issues.

When considering physical preparation I think the best insurance is a three month supply of food and a 72 hour kit.

The kit should be extremely portable such as a backpack which may be quickly taken in the automobile should there be a need to evacuate. The food storage is a great hedge against inflation, insurance that you can eat which is not subject to counter-party risk, protection against potential supply chain disruptions such as the recent swine flu advertising campaign, and relatively cheap. Food storage is a form of savings and procuring a three month supply of food may cost only a few hundred FRN$s.

Sure, there are additional preparations you can make such as opening a free GoldMoney account where you can begin using gold or silver in ordinary daily transactions, procuring a shotgun or Glock 9mm, storing a year or two of food, spending a bundle to secure a farm in a remote location.

Are you prepared? You may even consider taking a survivalism course.

Here’s a site (http://www.equipped.com/srvschol.htm) which lists survival schools throughout the country – of course, you can find much of the same information for a fraction of the price via our Poor Man Recession Survival CDs – buyers get Poor Man I and Poor Man II for a whopping $10 & free shipping. Order the MegaDeal at our website. www.PoorManSurvival.com

PARTING SHOT…from the ‘Is anything made in America?

I recently took my mother to a store called Hobby Lobby. It was packed to the rafters with overprices crap made in China AND it was jammed with eager shoppers! I refused to make any purchase and asked one of the managers if anything in the store was made in the USA – not one thing…yet all these Motor City citizens who moan about losing their job to foreign competition were standing in line wallets at that ready!

Chinese pet food is poisoning pets, and Chinese made toys were harming our children and now we learn Chinese drywall used in homes is injuring its occupants and most will have to be torn down as they’re beyond rehabilitation.

Even wind turbine contracts for use in this country are going to China – ARE we that stupid? No wonder so few middle class jobs exist. Some pundits call this a consumer revolution and most retailers have never seen anything like this before (the fact Americans have stopped purchasing useless crap). More Americans now rent their home vs. own one as jobs went bye-bye and the real estate market crash wiped out trillions of dollars in wealth.

Call it shrewd shopping or the ‘new frugality,’ most Americans either plain old can no longer afford the toys (except for any new electronic gizmo it seems) or they’ve finally wised up to the fact more isn’t always better…until Wall Street figures out it’s in their best interest to start making things here again (even if it costs more) they’ll continue to lose customers.

Frankly, our circle of friends makes a conscious effort to avoid stores which feature only made in China crap! We buy and swap a lot of stuff and take pride in feeling saavy rather than shabby!

A bit of humor to start your day…

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel “ pick up your shovel, mount your a...s and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land”.

Nearly 75 years ago, President Roosevelt (Democrat) said, “ Lay down your shovels, sit on your a...s, and light up a camel, this is the promised land”.

Now Obama has stolen your shovel, taxed your a....s, raised the price of camels, and mortgaged the Promised Land.

Furthermore, I was so depressed last night thinking about Health Care Plans, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, Savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc .

I called Lifeline, the suicide help line. I got a call center in Pakistan . I told them I was suicidal.

They all got excited and asked if I could drive a truck…

How to Have a Blow Out Yard Sale

It’s getting to be that time of year again…

Yard sales pop up in the spring and summer like mushrooms, but there is a knack to having a successful one. The reasons you may want to have a yard sale are numerous. Despite the hard work involved in getting the sale together, it is a chance to have fun, meet your neighbors, make money, lose money, get skunked, recycle, and clean out the clutter that has been accumulating.

The first order of business is to get a pad of paper and a pen and start going through the rooms in your house. What room has the most junk? Is it the kitchen, bedroom, garage? Check every corner of the closet, the shelves, etc. and evaluate everything honestly. Don’t get overly sentimental. If you haven’t used the thing in 10 years, why keep it around collecting dust? When listing your “inventory,” make notes like “Must go,” “Takes up too much room,” or “Can’t part with it.” This will help you organize what items will go in the yard sale. The greater assortment of goods, the larger your profit will be. More at:

What is Time Banking All About?

At its most basic level, Time banking is simply about spending an hour doing something for somebody in your community. That hour goes into the Time Bank as a Time Dollar. Then you have a Time dollar to spend on having someone doing something for you. It’s a simple idea, but it has powerful ripple effects in building community connections.

Each Time Bank has a website where you list what you would like to do for other members. You look up Time Bank services online or call a community coordinator to do it for you. You earn Time Dollars after each service you perform and then you get to spend it on whatever you want from the listings. More at:

The Promise of Thin-film Solar

From Mother Earth News, by Steve Heckeroth

Every hour, the sun beams more energy to the Earth’s surface than the global population uses in a year. Meanwhile, humanity struggles with the effects of pollution, climate change and fossil fuel dependence. Could it be that the solution to these problems is right above us? Modern photovoltaic (PV) technologies take advantage of renewable energy from the sun by converting sunlight into electricity. So why aren’t more of us using this remarkable technology to power our homes? When asked, the reason most people give is the cost of installing a PV system. But new thin-film PV products are getting better and cheaper all the time. This technology could soon change the way we think about electricity and make sunshine our “fuel” of choice.

The Rise of Thin-film Solar

The type of solar-electric module currently dominating the industry is crystalline silicon, which is made by encapsulating wafers of highly refined silicon under rectangular sheets of glass framed with aluminum. These modules have been the primary solar energy technology for more than 50 years.

Crystalline modules still dominate in PV sales, but in the last few years most new development work has focused on thin-film PV technologies. In 2005, more than 95 percent of the PV market was served by crystalline modules. Since then, thin film’s share of the market has risen steadily and is now 25 percent. Hundreds of thin-film companies have entered various stages of product development or production.

Large-area thin-film PV modules and laminates have been commercially available since the ’90s. Thin-film modules still aren’t as efficient per unit area as crystalline silicon modules, however, they have other advantages over crystalline silicon. Perhaps most importantly, thin-film solar is much less expensive to produce. Many thin-film panels are produced from amorphous silicon. These solar cells require much less high-grade silicon than it takes to produce crystalline silicon panels. Thin-film solar cells can also be made from other semiconductor materials, including copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) and cadmium telluride.

Can We Make Every Roof a Solar Roof?

Rather than building massive new power plants, why not install PV panels on every sunny roof and on simple shade structures over every parking lot? The same mass adoption that allowed room-sized mainframe computers to morph into laptops could cause huge, centralized power plants to give way to rooftop PV panels. In fact, some U.S. policies already encourage distributed generation by giving substantial tax incentives to homeowners and businesses that install PV systems.

Because thin-film solar panels are both lightweight and flexible, it’s possible to incorporate them directly into buildings — as roofing materials, for example. The idea of building-integrated photovoltaics is not new. Architects have been using PV modules as roofing since the early ’80s, but using the glass modules available at that time was both challenging and expensive. Glass is transparent, long-lasting and weatherproof, but it can shatter and is not an ideal roofing material.

In contrast, thin-film solar cells work very well on rooftops. Uni-Solar’s amorphous silicon thin-film laminates have been available for more than a decade, and new solar roofing products may soon be coming on the market. In October 2009, CertainTeed, a leading North American manufacturer of asphalt shingles, announced an agreement to develop roofing-integrated PV products for the residential market. In September 2009, Dow Building Solutions announced it is working with Global Solar, a leading manufacturer, to develop thin-film solar roofing shingles.

Many other possibilities exist for building-integrated photovoltaic applications. A few companies are producing thin-film modules that can be used as windows, and there is also great potential for developing low-cost solar siding. For every new technological development that’s announced, there are dozens more in the works. In short, solar power is becoming more affordable and available all the time. It’s possible that future generations will wonder why people ever used fossil fuels to produce electricity.

Seems Every country is in trouble…Parting Shot

As you might imagine, I subscribe to a large variety of newsletters, primarily of the economic forecasting type. I don’t see much optimism anywhere for any country other than India. The US is overextended with $100 trillion of debt and entitlement (Medicare, Social Security, etc.) problems, the Euro sucks because of Greece, Portugal and other budget concerns.

Probably what does frighten me the most is how states like California ($20 billion) and Illinois ($12.8 billion) will survive their indebtedness and WILL they ever learn anything about the future such as living within their means? Or, will they succumb to their normal behavior of seeking new ways to tax and spend? Some recently aired examples:

  • New Hampshire literally stole $110 million from a medical malpractice insurance pool ...
  • Colorado is trying to seize a $500 million surplus from a state workers’ compensation insurer ...
  • Connecticut has tried to create its own magic accounting rules ...
  • Hawaii has decided to change the definition of the English word for “week,” cutting schools down to four days ...

No doubt you’ve heard the news reports about the religious militia group arrested by FBI in MI, OH and IL…do you think they are the only group, which is fearful of our government and its unconstitutional actions, spendthrift ways and so forth?

The stimulus plan has pretty much been a disaster from what I can see – too much given to too many who created the financial mess in the first place. The next five years will be interesting as the warning signs are pretty clear and we’ve not faced up to the debt situation and lack of innovation here. My guess is, however, other nation’s will get hit even harder.

Celebrate Earth Day, April 22, 2010 and Happy Easter!

*What makes Clint's day. There's a new coffee-table book out on Clint Eastwood's film career, from the 1959 western Rawhide to his most recent directorial duties on Invictus. The book includes 325 photographs and movie stills and some wonderful quotes, such as this one from the time he had the romantic lead in The Bridges of Madison County. Said Clint, "This romantic stuff is really tough. I can't wait to get back to shooting and killing."

The Green Millionaire

I just finished reading the Green Millionaire by Nigel Williams. An interesting book filled with methods for which we could all save money and the planet by becoming more recycling oriented…lots of good statistics and suggestion for products to save energy, boost your car mileage and so on. The biggest drawback…no website links or contact information for the products he suggests.

His premise is you can become wealthy when you implement the money-saving strategies he suggests while saving the planet.

The book is free and includes a trial subscription to his newsletter…the catch – you sign up for a bi-monthly automatic billing of $29.95. You do have a free 14-day trial evaluation period. I’m still waiting for my 1st issue of the online newsletter.

Who would’ve guessed…lawyers are the worst drivers. According to an insurance institute study, 44% of lawyers and judges admitted to being in an accident prior to shopping for auto insurance. Financial professionals, and government workers were next in line as the worst drivers.

Europeans are gloating this week. The continent might be struggling with ballooning debts, a faltering euro and national strikes, but when the U.S. House voted in favor of President Barack Obama's health care bill Sunday night, March 21, Europeans seized the moment to thumb their noses at Americans and remind them that they've had pretty good health care for decades.

Finally…Does anyone aside from myself feel Americans are practicing the crime of democracy? The federal government seems to dominate our nightly news and our daily lives…yet, access to government actions are limited to mainstream folks more than ever before. Freedom of information and open access always seem in short supply. Indeed, under Bush Jr., the Attorney General sent a memo to all federal agencies directing them to cripple the process wherever and however possible. Slowly but surely, the government rules every aspect of our lives.

So much for transparency in government that Pres. Obama promised. Below is a resource you can use to learn more about Freedom of Information:

Odd Stuff Your Freezer will help to preserve…

Batteries: A number of studies have shown that storing batteries in the freezer helps them retain their charge longer. This is less true for alkaline batteries (freezing extends their shelf life by only about 5%) than it is for NiMH and Nicad batteries often used in electronics. Keeping NiMH batteries in the freezer can boost battery life by 90%.

* Plant Seeds: Many (but not all) types of plant seeds will keep longer and germinate more successfully when stored in the freezer. Consult a copy of Seed Storage of Horticultural Crops, by S.D. Doijode, for more than you'd ever want to know about this fascinating topic. Many of the planet's most important seeds are being stored in the chilly "doomsday" seed vault in Norway.

·        Plastic Soda Bottles Filled with Water: Grandma knew that keeping her freezer chockfull helped to insulate it and perform better, and kept things cold longer if the electricity failed. I like to fill empty plastic soda bottles nearly full with water, and put them in the freezer to take up any vacant space. Plus they make convenient "drip-less ice cubes" to use instead of real ice cubes in my ice chest. More at:

Stressors Sapping the Middle Class

Working harder for less is the new normal--for those lucky enough to have a job. Millions of families are giving up comforts they long took for granted, such as restaurant meals, new clothes, vacations, spacious cars, home improvements, and cable television. College funds and retirement savings have taken a hit, and some families have been forced to downsize their homes or, worse, submit to foreclosure. Little wonder that record numbers of Americans tell pollsters it's getting harder to get ahead and that they worry their kids' standard of living may fall rather than rise.

In a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll last fall, Americans were asked how much of the time they trusted the government to do the right thing; 65% said "only some of the time," and a stunning 11% said "never."

Big Brother is watching…Resources to protect your privacy

Your personal information—everything from your shopping habits to your health history—can be available to creditors, employers, landlords, insurers, law enforcement agencies, and, of course, criminals. All they need to do is tap into the public and private databases that gather, buy, and sell your vital statistics.

Demand for your personal information has exploded in recent years. Its availability has also raised privacy concerns. When users buy and compile various pieces of information about you, “they can paint a very complete picture of your activities,” says Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy at the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group.

Home-Butchered Meat

The thud of heavy knives bashing bones, the splat of dead muscle hitting the table, the twisting of heads off bodies and the ripping of flesh from limp, cold limbs. Is this a nightmare vision from the makers of Saw or Hostel? An autopsy? No, it's actually the scene at a home kitchen near you, as more and more young Americans are taking a DIY approach to meat. It's part home economics, part politics and certainly at least part fad. But it's changing the way many Americans approach meat, chop by succulent chop.

OIL Still at $75 a barrel-Fuel Prices Rose 20 cents a gallon last week…

Talk about short-term thinking! OPEC is pushing car-manufacturers and drivers around the world to accelerate hybrid and electric car development. Just this week, Chrysler announced it would roll out an all-electric car — based on the Fiat 500 platform but made in America — for 2012. This car, which was tested in Europe, gets up to 120 miles on a charge. Other U.S.-made electric cars will hit the highways even sooner.

The combination of electric, hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles entering the market should drive U.S. gasoline use DOWN over the next 5 to 10 years, perhaps down a lot. And this should rev up America's energy independence. The only thing that could derail this shift is lower gasoline prices. And OPEC is making sure that's not going to happen.

The cheapest source of new energy is to use less of it, and therefore make the energy you have go further. A smart grid helps you do that, by managing energy usage more effectively. The Obama administration announced a $3.4 billion package in 2009 to help build a smart electric grid meant to trim utility bills and reduce blackouts.

Nearly half of Americans are "extremely" or "very worried" about rising costs for health care and health insurance, and a majority place the blame on drug and insurance company profits, a new Harris Interactive/HealthDay poll finds

Overview of how the new healthcare reform will affect you

"On Sunday evening the richest, most powerful country in the world, the USA, finally entered the 20th century. Yes, not the 21st century, but the 20th," read an article published Monday on the popular French news website Rue89.com.

Parting Shot-No church would have me but…

I grew up in a part of Cleveland, OH where the population was about 40% Jewish (I’m a Heinz-57 Deist) and I often noted how well as a whole these neighbors did financially. Young men were groomed to become professionals or business owners and I always felt they prospered because of an unwritten dogma – “Sell to anyone, but buy from your fellow Jews.”

When I went to college in Arizona I noticed a similar philosophy among the Mormons. In fact I admire the Mormons for several reasons. They too foster success among their young and willingly support the businesses of their spiritual community. Also, their members never need rely on government welfare. The Mormons will help their own through paying rent and utilities for an out-of-work member and they have their own grocery store to provide food to its members. They also practice long-term food storage and believe everyone should stockpile a two-year supply of food.

These observations led me to found a not-for-profit group (later in life) called the Minimalist Group, which is based on the idea of minimizing dependence on government while maximizing self reliance.

It’s been my goal in building up the Poor Man site and Bulletin to foster a sense of community among its readers. Sharing resources, ideas and thoughts is what will allow us to remain optimistic during trying times and will help each of us survive and prosper. A small reminder – you can always email me and/or post your wants and needs and thoughts through our Yahoo community bulletin site.

Yours for better living,

P.S. Spending into oblivion

We're in the terminal stages of the world's most gigantic pyramid scheme" set to vaporize assets of the average citizen…

Here's just a glimpse of the likely fallout:

  • A PRICE EXPLOSION as Americans scramble over one another to obtain tangible assets or simply hoard basic necessities, before the dollar's purchasing power evaporates fully.
  • WIDESPREAD SHORTAGES, sparse grocery store shelves, and the return of long gas lines.
  • FAILED BUSINESSES and economic dislocations far eclipsing anything we've seen to date.
  • A BREAKDOWN IN COMMERCE, as longer-term transactions become impossible to do.
  • RISING CRIME with rampant unemployment far beyond today's "official" 10% jobless rate.
  • GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS DRYING UP, with the dependent class – angry, hungry, and desperate – taking to the streets. Looting, arson, and general lawlessness will quickly follow.

The Fed's own Inspector General in recent Congressional testimony admitted after much waffling that she cannot account for trillions of dollars in off-balance-sheet transactions and has absolutely no idea how much the secretive central bank is losing on its "investments."

As scandalous as the massive corporate bailouts are, they pale in comparison to those that will be required for Social Security and Medicare. An editorial in Barron's stated flatly – "Medicare, Medicaid, pensions, indeed the full freight of the federal government constitutes a Ponzi scheme in plain sight. Leveraging Your Assets

In the late 1980s I owned a successful, regional B2B publishing company. We were profitable our first year, which is unheard of in most businesses and this was pre-internet days. Several factors contributed to this. We were innovative. We were the first publication in the country to put our media kit onto a computer disk – this in itself generated a lot of positive press for us.

Perhaps the biggest reason for our success was our focus on developing multiple profit centers or leveraging our assets. Our nearly 40,000 subscribers allowed us to successfully implement business shows, related newsletters, a B2B coupon mailer called BizPak, list rentals and more.

One of our profit centers included a distributorship of Nightgale-Conant business and motivational audio and video tapes which we rented and sold. As I spent a lot of time on the road in those days (promoting our business) I listened to these tapes and they never failed to provide me with profitable ideas. Just one idea, which was an aside from the speaker, sparked an innovation which generated an immediate $1000 profit from something we were already doing….and it did so for each subsequent year.

The reason I mention this…you can do the same in your daily life. Whether for personal or business concerns, you can leverage ideas into more profit, a better lifestyle or a means of helping others…in other words – RECYCLE ideas and adapt them to your own situation.

Of course, not every idea will produce results but you should make every effort to acquire new ideas (that usually means reading, listening and adapting). Consider it a form of mental recycling.

NOTE: See my idea for a new highway welcome sign over Washington DC at end…

Pop Secret Offers Movie Night

Movies and popcorn are as natural a combination as… well, movie theaters and sticky floors. Diamond Foods’ PopSecret popcorn brand, which has cultivated a connection with film in the past, has just launched a new Movie Night Maker utility on its Web site to enable users to pick a flick and invite their friends over via e-mail or Facebook.

Visitors to www.popsecret.com are presented on the home page with the Movie Night Maker, which asks them to use three scrolling menus to select the movie occasion (from “Rainy Day” and “Sleepover” to “Break-up” and “Fright Night”), the audience, and the mood they want to establish (from “sentimental’ and “silly” to “rebellious” and “bummed”).

Stimulus Funds Still Up for Grabs

It’s estimated 27% of the billions set aside for grants and loans to create jobs is still unpledged. Here are a few you might be able to tap.

·        Funding for miscellaneous small project contracts can be found at: FedBizOpps.gov while grants are found at: Grants.Gov (see the Poor Man site to learn more about how to get a grant)  Most stimulus funds flow through state government portals which are listed at: www.whitehouse.gov/omb/grants_spoc

·        You can also contact your state economic development office to find opportunities. Our government doesn’t particularly like newcomers so consider pairing up with an experienced partner which can be found at: FedSources.com

·        Know your federal agency when applying for contracts and grants. Most federal agencies have a SADBUS (Small & Disadvantaged Business Utilization Specialist) who can advise newcomers.

Three Ways to Go Solar

From Natural Home, by Julie Collins

http://www.naturalhomemagazine.com/solar-homes/3-ways-to-go-solar-simple-solutions-for-going-solar.aspx

Think capturing the sun’s energy is too expensive? Three homeowners—with three very different budgets—find ways to build photovoltaic power.

He bought the system.

What He Did: After retiring from a 33-year career in water politics in 2003, Patrick Ferraro retrofitted his creekside home with a solar water heater and thirty-six 100-watt solar panels, which power his home and recharge his Chrysler Global Electric Motorcar neighborhood electric vehicle. Patrick researched solar options and took classes on solar energy payback, then hired Mike Clifton of Santa Clara’s M C Solar Engineering to advise him and handle the installation.

Cost: The installed system cost $39,600 before rebates and credits. Ferraro received a California Energy Commission rebate for $10,700 and a California state income tax credit of $4,500. The panels reduce Ferraro’s power import by 50 percent and save him $600 a year.

How It Works: Ferraro’s photovoltaic (PV) system converts sunlight into energy, which powers the freezer and refrigerator; washer and dryer; window air conditioner; wall heaters; and shop tools. Maintenance is easy. Ferraro washes the panels with a long-handled broom and a garden hose. In the past six years, he hasn’t had to replace or repair a panel. “The system runs itself,” he says.

Why He Did It: Since he purchased his home in 1972, Ferraro has wanted to go solar. “Regardless of the cost you incur when you install PVs, the feel-good part is priceless,” he says. Nearly nonexistent utility bills are pretty nice, too.

Drawbacks: Solar panel installation can be pricey—even with credits and rebates. At current energy rates, it can take 15 to 20 years or more to break even.

They rent their panels.

What They Did: Peggy and Glen Roberts wanted a solar-electric system for their 2,100-square-foot bungalow, but even with rebates and tax incentives, it was out of their price range. Last year, the couple discovered SolarCity’s SolarLease program. Once the Roberts replaced their tile roof underlayment (which they needed to do anyway), SolarCity installed PV panels onto the tile roof. The 4.1-kilowatt DC system consists of fifty-five 75-watt panels that produce 7,084 kilowatt-hours a year. Any excess power their system generates is sold to the power company, and if their electrical loads exceed their system’s capacity, they can pull power from the grid. Ideally, Glen Roberts said, the amount of excess power they produce will offset much of what they need from the grid over the course of the year.

Cost: The Roberts’ only upfront cost was a $150 permit fee for their neighborhood homeowners association. The Robertses will pay $50 a month for their 15-year lease, with an annual increase of 3.5 percent (lower than the 5 percent estimated utility rate increase). The couple, whose panels were up and running in September, expects to save 10 to 15 percent on an annual basis when both the lease payments and reduced utility costs are factored in. “In the long run, it is of course better to purchase a system than to lease,” Glen Roberts said. “But if you do not have $30,000 lying around, the question becomes, ‘Do we lease and take advantage of a solar lease program we can afford now, or do we continue to be reliant upon power generated by dirty fuels?’”

How It Works: It’s similar to leasing a car. After checking out the location and applicants’ credit history, SolarCity installs the panels and provides maintenance. For their monthly rent payment, homeowners are able to use all the energy their panels produce and sell the excess to their local utility. At the end of 15 years, clients can renew, upgrade or have the panels removed for free. If they sell their home before the lease term is up, the lease term can be taken over by a qualified homebuyer.

Why They Did It: “Going solar, particularly with no financial sacrifice on our part, seemed like the greatest contribution we could make toward reducing our carbon footprint,” Peggy Roberts said. Glen Roberts adds, “We’ll be producing most of the energy we need. I also like that we’ll be helping to power the neighborhood.”

Drawbacks: Solar-as-service programs aren’t available everywhere. Because the solar providers own the panels, they get most rebates and credits. (SolarCity maintains that the utility company rebate helps them keep the lease payments low.)

She supports solar.

What She Did: Since Austin Utilities began offering its Solar Choice program, Belita Schindler has paid extra on her monthly utility bills to support solar and wind projects in her area.

Cost: Schindler estimates she spends an extra $10 to $12 a month on her utility bill.

How It Works: The Solar Choice program connects companies that produce and share solar energy—such as Good Earth Natural Foods in Austin—with customers such as Schindler, who support renewable energy development by paying a small premium on their utility bills. The panels installed by local companies power their businesses—and whatever they don’t use is sold to Austin Utilities. Then, thanks to the contributions of individuals like Belita, the local solar producers receive a bonus from the money raised through the Solar Choice program.

Why She Did It: It’s a low-cost, low-commitment way for Schindler to support alternative energy in her area. “We have to take care of the planet, and you do what you can,” Schindler says. Purchasing or leasing solar panels isn’t an option, but she’s willing to help others go solar—and she’d continue to do so even if rates increase. “It’s totally painless,” she says.

Drawbacks: Utility-based green power programs let you support renewable energy producers, but the electricity that’s fed into your home isn’t necessarily solar. Programs vary considerably. Austin’s Solar Choice program provides tangible results in the community, but in many cases utilities simply purchase renewable energy credits from producers that are already up and running.

The "underground" economy is rising in direct proportion to the fall of the conventional economy, which is being choked by job-destroying regulations and tax rates.

Interesting trends you may have noticed:

  • Online barter organizations are mushrooming on the Internet. Sites such as Barterquest.com, Swap-It-Now.com, Swaplease.com, Swapthing.com, and many others are enjoying growing success as people liquidate unneeded used items for things they actually need.
  • Pawn shop chains, major discounters, and self-help services are prospering. There has been phenomenal growth in Dollar General stores and many other bargain basement retailers of basic needs. Companies such as Autozone, which offer free diagnostic tools to those buying parts to work on their own cars, have seen major growth.
  • Community colleges which teach trade skills such as electrical wiring, plumbing, and welding are packed with eager new students.

Home schooling, DIY courses at community colleges are growing in popularity and essential self preparation is taking place…all of which we’ve predicted since the year 1999…of course, we offer much of this at our site and via our Poor Man Survival CDs.

Is Rush Going to Leave our Country when Obama’s Healthcare package passes?

There are many hoping he will leave…but the truth is, none of the health plan has been fully shared with the public in easy-to-understand terms and it has left many afraid. Rush is stating this is the end of our democracy…then again, he’s prone to hyperbole.

However, it is clear…

Voters are furious. They hate Washington. They also detest incumbents. They're concerned most about the economy and unemployment that's hovering near 10 percent. They're also split over whether Obama's health plan is good for a nation with enormous budget deficits and climbing debt.

A Gallup poll showed more Americans believe the measure will make things worse rather than better for the country as a whole and for them personally. And most polls show most people don't like the plan although some surveys showed Americans giving high marks to individual elements.

It’s my belief that

Most Americans have already been conditioned for servitudeMedical tourism will become increasingly popular.

Bone to Pick

For more than 20 years I’ve been a loyal supporter of a certain charity, donating a 14’ foot truckload of goods this year plus cash and time. Upon coming to MI we’ve noticed their growing greed and poor customer service (this charity isn’t alone). A visit to one of their stores left my jaw on the floor. As many of you know, I am a bookseller. Finding books of any decent kind has become much harder. This particular charity has hired a person to price books as if it were operating as a used a bookstore and the prices were sky high – much more than I could ever get on eBay.

I wound up purchasing what I thought was a new coffee maker (still sealed in the original box and priced only slightly less than traditional retail). Upon opening the box I found there was no carafe so we took it back asking for an exchange or store credit. “Absolutely not, too bad,” was the clerk’s reply. My calls to the area store Captain were never returned.

I will never patronize this charity again. I estimate I’ve donated about $20,000 to them over the years. Guess what? Not anymore! Why should I support an entity which, has now become a competitor, which in my book (pun intended) is not how these thrift stores/charities are supposed to operate.

That’s it for this week!

Although it’s illegal for businesses to discriminate against 40+ workers, we all know they do (because they can get inexperienced kids cheaper). Because it’s tougher for older workers who have been laid off to find decent jobs, many are fueling an entrepreneurial boom in this country.

There is growth in the Baby Boomer industries as well…in-home senior care, home handyman services, medical device delivery and installation and home electronics installation and repair services.

Although a variety of businesses have been launched by those over 40 one of my favorites is that of specialty farming. It’s tough to find good, locally grown produce in many supermarkets today. Organic and local growers sell to local consumers, eating establishments and even to local supermarkets and institutions.

New Rules for a Healthy Credit Score

The rules that credit-card companies have to live by changed dramatically with the enactment of new regulations last month. Now, some of the rules for consumers striving to maintain good credit are changing, too.

For the most part, card holders would still do well to pay on time, keep their balances low and refrain from applying for too many credit cards at once. But some of the old tenets may not always hold up, as credit-card companies continue to adapt to the new environment and look for ways to run their for-profit businesses. More at:

How to Organize a Community Seed Swap

Host a seed swap in your area to connect gardeners and help everyone learn more about gardening in your region.

From Mother Earth News, By Tabitha Alterman

HOW SEED SWAPS WORK

The traditional model of a seed swap is an informal local get-together, usually in early spring, where gardening neighbors all bring extra seeds saved from previous seasons — along with any surplus seedlings they won’t be able to use that year — and trade these valuable goods among themselves. Who had the juiciest tomatoes last year? You’ll want a few seeds from those plants. You started too many broccoli seedlings in your backyard greenhouse? Why not spread the love around?

The most valuable aspect of attending a seed swap may actually be the chance to glean local wisdom about what works — or doesn’t work — in your shared gardening microclimate. Christine Sheppard, an organic farmer in Hawai'i, says she has learned a great deal about her microclimate through local seed swaps. "It put us in touch with a whole fund of knowledge about what plants grow well in our varied microclimates here in Hawai'i, most of which are not like anything on the mainland. Which tomatoes stood up to fruit fly, which root vegetables would grow in our very gritty broken lava soil, what to do with the local traditional staple of taro apart from making poi, which greens grow in our humid hot climate. It was "eat local" at its best, and a whole lot of fun too!"

READY, SET, GO! ORGANIZE YOUR OWN SEED SWAP

So now, how about some step-by-step instructions for organizing a seed swap of your own? If you already know other gardeners in your area, you’re well on your way to setting up a fun event that will get everyone in your neighborhood started down the path to Master Gardener!

1. Choose a time and place. Depending on how many people you think may attend, it might be coziest to host the seed/plant swap in someone’s home or garden. (Reserve tables, chairs and tents, too, if necessary.) Or, if you expect to draw a larger crowd, look for free spaces you can reserve, such as a public library meeting room or a church basement.

2. Publicize your seed swap. A good place to start is by notifying local gardening groups and botanic gardens, and you can also reach interested people through classified ads, grocery cooperative newsletters, community bulletin boards and chamber of commerce calendars. Mother Earth News magazine can help you publicize your seed swap. They will gladly e-mail their subscribers in your area to notify them of your community seed swap. Visit www.MotherEarthNews.com/Seed-Swaps.aspx to sign up for this free service.

3. Invite speakers. Contact your local gardening groups to find experts who know how to save different kinds of seeds, and can get folks fired up about why to save and share seeds. Extension agents also can give great tips on gardening in your specific region. Another excellent discussion topic would be about how to start seeds and transplant new seedlings.

4. Request seed donations from local gardeners or seed companies in advance, to bolster the offerings that people will bring.

5. Print off some handy articles about seed-starting, seed-saving and other gardening techniques to distribute at your seed swap. MotherEarthNews.com provides tons of free resources for gardeners, including how-to articles, seed company directories, gardening event listings and more.

6. Label everything clearly. Bring plenty of little dishes, or baggies and markers, to help gardeners divvy up and identify everything. Ask seed and plant donors to write down everything they know about their seed that might be helpful to donees. For example: “Green Zebra Tomato: open-pollinated, heirloom, saved from last season, has grown well in my garden for years, heavy producer, medium-size fruit, indeterminate growth habit, about 70 to 80 days to maturity, good slicer, amazing tart flavor, attractive green and yellow stripes.” It may help to give your donors notecards that they can fill out, with all these variables.

7. Host a contest to make the event more fun! Prizes could go to the gardener with the widest variety of seeds, the attendee who traveled the farthest, the youngest or oldest gardener, etc. And Mother Earth News can help you with a contest, too: The gardener who brings the widest variety of heirloom tomato seeds will win one of their highly recommended ergonomic garden trowels! (Visit www.MotherEarthNews.com/Seed-Swaps.aspx to participate.)

8. When it’s all over, let us know how it went. So you organized a smashing success of a seed swap, right? E-mail your feedback to OrganicGardening@motherearthnews.com for us to post online for other organizers to share.

News Roundup

Middle Class Money Angst Still Apparent

Fed's Flow of Funds numbers again show average Americans' net worth gaining more by mortgage defaults than asset appreciation.

If there is a recovery in Americans' finances, they don't see it.

The Federal Reserve reported Thursday that the net worth of U.S. "households" increased at about a 5% annual rate in the fourth quarter, a good deal slower than the blistering 20% pace over the two previous quarters, but still a solid increase

Not long after the news was posted on the Wall Street Journal's Web site early that afternoon, the vituperative comments began to flow. Many simply dismissed the data as inaccurate or worse. The numbers simply didn't jibe with what they were seeing in their own finances or those around them.

Social Security to start cashing Uncle Sam's IOUs

The retirement nest egg of an entire generation is stashed away in this small town along the Ohio River: $2.5 trillion in IOUs from the federal government, payable to the Social Security Administration.

It's time to start cashing them in.

For more than two decades, Social Security collected more money in payroll taxes than it paid out in benefits — billions more each year.

Not anymore. This year, for the first time since the 1980s, when Congress last overhauled Social Security, the retirement program is projected to pay out more in benefits than it collects in taxes — nearly $29 billion more.

Sounds like a good time to start tapping the nest egg. Too bad the federal government already spent that money over the years on other programs, preferring to borrow from Social Security rather than foreign creditors. In return, the Treasury Department issued a stack of IOUs — in the form of Treasury bonds — which are kept in a nondescript office building just down the street from Parkersburg's municipal offices.

Now the government will have to borrow even more money, much of it abroad, to start paying back the IOUs, and the timing couldn't be worse. The government is projected to post a record $1.5 trillion budget deficit this year, followed by trillion dollar deficits for years to come. More at:

U.S. to roll out major broadband policy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. regulators will announce a major Internet policy this week to revolutionize how Americans communicate and play, proposing a dramatic increase in broadband speeds that could let people download a high-definition film in minutes instead of hours.

Dramatically increasing Internet speeds to 25 times the current average is one of the myriad goals to be unveiled in the National Broadband Plan by the the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday…

FACT CHECK: Premiums would rise under Obama plan

Hey…just give us the same plan as Congress! Average annual premium for a single payer is $4,824

WASHINGTON – Buyers, beware: President Barack Obama says his health care overhaul will lower premiums by double digits, but check the fine print.

Premiums are likely to keep going up even if the health care bill passes, experts say. If cost controls work as advertised, annual increases would level off with time. But don't look for a rollback. Instead, the main reason premiums would be more affordable is that new government tax credits would help cover the cost for millions of people. More at:

What Happens If Greece Really Defaults?

Most Americans don’t give a hoot about Greece and its debt – we have enough of our problems many will say. However, our economy is tied into the world economy and the fallout for America is apparent…

Earlier this week, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou traveled to the United States to promote a message: We're in this together. The debt crisis that has threatened the Greek economy and the stability of the European Union's monetary policies "very much involves America's interests," Papandreou stated in a speech at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

The prime minister--who was born in St. Paul, Minn.--even connected the current crisis to the Great Depression as well as the Great Recession. "If the European crisis metastasizes, it could create a new global financial crisis with implications as grave as the U.S.-originated crisis two years ago," he said.

NOTE: If you think that America's federal deficit is turning into a non-issue ... or that we can just go back to business as usual ... you'd better consider the drama now unfolding in the hard numbers just released last week:

February deficit: In February alone, the official U.S. federal deficit was a monstrous $221 billion, far greater than anything we have ever experienced in history.

The president and Congress are making America's problems worse by exceeding the limits of their constitutional authority.

Parting shot-the older I get, the dumber I feel

I used to be a whiz at fixing VWs – now like many men, if there is a problem with the car, I still open the hood knowing full well, I won’t have clue as to what’s wrong (it’s a guy thing). I used to be a whiz at fixing computers, now, half the time I don’t even recognize the registry errors or other problems. I used to be a whiz at marketing (I wrote a best selling book on the subject) and promotion. Now, I can’t figure out how to promote this newsletter or blog well. Guess I’m a ‘socializing dud’ when it comes to social networking sites.

When I was younger, I had all the answers.  Now, I cannot figure out my biggest challenge of all…how to take over the world. (must have watched too many Pinky & the Brain cartoons). So when Pinky (my wife) asks me what are we going to do now…I still respond with “the same thing we do everyday Pinky, figure out a way to take over the world.”

Household Tips n Tricks

Baking Soda and Baking Powder

·        Home made baking powder (100-year-old recipe). Combine ¼ pound of tartaric acid, ¼ pound baking soda, 1 pint flour and sift six times. Place into airtight containers.

·        Clean your produce with baking soda for safer food. Wash fruits & vegetables in a pot of cold water with 2-3 tablespoons of soda to remove impurities.

·        Use baking soda as a yeast substitute by combining powdered vitamin C or citric acid and baking soda – mix equal parts. The dough you add it to won’t have to rise before baking.

·        Reduce acidity in foods. If you’re sensitive to high acid foods like tomato sauces or coffee, lower the acidity by adding a pinch of baking soda while cooking; will also counteract the taste of vinegar if you’ve used too much.

·        Make better baked beans without the ‘toot’ after affect by adding a pinch of baking soda to the beans while they’re cooking to reduce the gas.

·        Clear a clogged drain (one of my proven favorites) by adding a cup of soda to the drain followed by a cup of hot vinegar (zap in the microwave). The drain will foam up instantly. If needed, repeat or in the case of a drain clogged with grease, add some table salt and follow up with boiling water; let sit overnight and rinse with hot tap water.

Nothing beats home grown and after several disastrous at gardening in AZ, I’m looking forward to a real garden again!

Get Growing Early: 11 tips to get food growing long before spring.

From GRIT magazine, by Amy Grisak

After struggling through a winter of grocery store greens and frozen produce, I don’t want to wait until June to enjoy fresh vegetables. Just because there might be snow on the ground doesn’t mean planting has to wait for months.

From the ground up

The key to germination is to plant seed in soil that’s warmed to 65-75 degrees. But in the frozen North, how do you get that soil warm enough, early enough? One easy method is to spread clear plastic over the soil, burying the edges to keep it in place and lock in the heat. Even if daytime temperatures hover in the 40s, the sun’s energy can heat the soil beneath the plastic to a whopping 125 degrees. Keep the plastic in place until you’re ready to plant. If your early season garden plot is a raised bed, so much the better. Soil in a plastic covered, raised bed will warm faster.

When growing heat-loving crops such as melons, peppers and cucumbers, it’s especially important to pre-warm the soil. Transplanting these crops through black plastic, which will keep the weeds down and the soil temperature up, helps ensure success in the north.

When you don’t have a greenhouse

Many gardeners dream of a permanent greenhouse; they take up valuable space in the yard and can be expensive. But most of us can find an area for at least one cold frame. This structure can be a simple, bottomless wooden box built with an angled, window-like top to gather the sun’s energy. Many cold frames are painted dark green, black or brown to absorb solar heat.

A reasonable cold frame size is 3 by 4 feet, which is easy for one person to move, although permanent frames can be much larger. Just be sure you can reach the internal growing spaces without the need to climb inside.

For an extra-early jump on the season, you can position the cold frame over a bed of fresh horse manure, which produces heat as it composts. Be sure to place a sheet of perforated plastic over the manure and layer several inches of soil on top of it to keep the roots of the new plants from reaching the hot manure.

Water the young plants inside the cold frame lightly in the mornings when it’s dry. Moisture doesn’t evaporate as quickly in the cold frame as outdoors, and wet roots in cold conditions aren’t good for most garden plants.

Toasty tunnels

Broccoli, kale, cabbage and cauliflower are ideal choices to transplant early, since their leaves can actually freeze for a short period of time and still recover. But don’t simply plant them out in the open and hope for the best.

Plastic tunnels and floating row covers are two invaluable tools to keep hardy garden vegetables happy. They create a warm microclimate, which protects transplants and seedlings from the cool and wet springtime weather. The frost protective blanket protects the plants to 25 degrees, while the plastic tunnels typically keep them safe above 28 degrees. For particularly cold nights, toss a blanket on top for additional protection.

Floating row covers, also known as garden quilts, are made from lightweight, polyester or polypropylene fabric that can be placed directly on top of the plants. But, for early spring use, I prefer to use a support system to keep the material off tender plants, such as tomatoes and squash.

Secure support hoops, whether made from wire or arched PVC pipes, by pushing them firmly into the ground roughly 2 1/2 feet apart. Since both plastic and other row-cover fabrics are light, it’s imperative to secure them with landscape pins or staples to prevent the wind from blowing them into the next county.

One drawback to covers is the need to remove the material to water the plants. This can be remedied by placing a drip hose alongside the plants before enclosing them. Later in the season, it’s best to remove the material during the day to allow pollinating insects to reach the blossoms.

The beauty of the floating row cover is it allows 85 percent of sunlight through and doesn’t tend to overheat. However, like a full-sized greenhouse, the plastic-covered field tunnels can overheat rapidly. Be sure to open up the ends by pinning them to the hoop with a clothes pin to allow proper ventilation.

Walls filled with water

Tomato-lovers take heart, with the invention of water-filled, plastic tipis impatient gardeners can plant their precious crop up to eight weeks before the last frost date. Water tipis, which absorb the sun’s rays during the day and gradually release the heat during the night, also work well for peppers, eggplant and other crops that thrive in warm temperatures. Look for the Wall-O-Water or Kozy-Coats brands.

Plant the seedling in the pre-warmed soil and cover with an inverted 5-gallon bucket. Place the tipi around the bucket and use the garden hose to fill each cylinder to within a few inches of the top. Pull up the bucket, and the tipi will close upon itself, creating a temperate environment for the plant to protect it from cold, wind, rain and even snowstorms. I’ve had late-season blizzards shock the rest of the garden, while my tomatoes pulled through with flying colors.

As the plants progress, prop open the enclosures with stakes or wooden crochet rings to allow the plant to grow through the top. The tipis can be removed once there is no risk of frost, or they may be left on through the summer.

Garden cloches

The next best option to solar umbrellas is to use a gardening bell, or cloche, to protect individual plants. Originally, cloches were made of bell-shaped glass. They offer a pretty, classic look to the early spring garden, but they’re expensive and fragile. Instead, many gardeners opt to use translucent plastic jugs or waxed-paper caps (also called hot caps).

To use the jugs, simply cut off the bottom and push it over the planted seedling. Remove the lid to provide ventilation, and keep the jugs on the plants until they outgrow them. Unless there is drip irrigation running along the plants, each jug should be removed for watering instead of dousing the plants through the opening.

Planting as early as possible is a challenge, but the rewards far exceed the effort. By utilizing a few, or all, of these techniques, it’s possible to enjoy those first tomatoes or peppers weeks before your neighbors.

IRS Outlines Additional Steps to Assist Unemployed Taxpayers and Others

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced several additional steps it is taking this tax season to help people having difficulties meeting their tax obligations because of unemployment or other financial problems.

The steps –– an expansion of efforts that began more than a year ago –– include additional flexibility on offers in compromise for struggling taxpayers, a series of Saturday “open houses” offering taxpayers extra opportunities to work out tax problems face to face with the IRS, special outreach with partner groups to unemployed taxpayers and the availability of more information on a special section of the IRS Web site.

“Times are tough for many people, and the IRS wants to do everything it can to help people who have lost their job or face financial strain,” IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said. “We continue to make adjustments to key programs and expand ways for people to get help. We’re doing everything we can to help ease the burden on struggling taxpayers.”

New Flexibility for Offers in Compromise

For some taxpayers, an offer in compromise –– an agreement between a taxpayer and the IRS that settles the taxpayer’s debt for less than the full amount owed –– continues to be a viable option. IRS employees will now have additional flexibility when considering offers in compromise from taxpayers facing economic troubles, including the recently unemployed. More at: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=220001,00.html

Why Americans are so angry

Heather Gass always felt she had to suppress her conservative views, living as she did in the liberal San Francisco Bay area. A year ago that all changed.

CNBC financial reporter Rick Santelli had just blasted the Obama administration's plan to help homeowners facing foreclosure, and called for a "tea party" protest in Chicago. The idea caught fire around the country, and soon Ms. Gass, a 40-something real estate agent, was organizing weekly street-corner demonstrations in her hometown of Orinda, Calif.

Her focus was fiscal discipline, aimed not just at the $75 billion mortgage bailout but also the administration's $787 billion stimulus package and President Obama's budget. She remembers her first signs well: "Stop printing money" and "China owns us." By Congress's summer recess, when opposition to Mr. Obama's healthcare plan burst forth, she had 100 people protesting on street corners, she says.

How will it end? Only two scenarios are possible:

  • Washington will slash spending to the bone (and raise taxes till), sinking our economy into a depression. Or ...
  • Washington will DESTROY the value of our money.

Are we burning down the house financially in this country?

"It's Time For Revolution."  15 Reasons

So says Professor Bill Quigley - a law professor at Loyola University in New Orleans and legal director of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

In an article published Sunday by CommonDreams.org, he offered 15 reasons why, starting with "It is time for a revolution.

"Government does not work for regular people. It appears to work quite well for big corporations, banks, insurance companies, military contractors, lobbyists, and for the rich and powerful. But it does not work for people.

He goes on to point out that last year "over 2.8 million people lost their homes to foreclosure or bank repossessions – nearly 8000 each day (while) the government bailed out Bank of America, Citigroup, AIG, Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the auto industry and enacted the troubled asset (TARP) program with $1.7 trillion of our money.

"Wall Street then awarded itself over $20 billion in bonuses in 2009 alone, an average bonus (on top of pay) of $123,000."

He says with 17 million people currently jobless (and the figure is likely much higher) there are millions more only able to find part-time work…(Wonder what took him so long – I’ve been saying –since the 80s- we don’t need another election; we need another revolution! Get the rest of the story at:

WHY ADVOCATES AND LAWMAKERS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT INVOLUNTARY MICROCHIPPING

If you do not believe the threat of involuntary microchipping is real, please take a moment to read over the following disquieting developments. Taken together, they reveal a focused effort to promote human microchipping. The time to nip this trend in the bud is now. http://www.antichips.com/is-the-threat-real.htm

The Poor Man reported on this development several times last year. My take is the government will use national healthcare to force Americans to carry a universal national ID card complete with biometric chips…soon, you may not be able to get healthcare, work or even buy groceries without one. In China, agents can scan you from 60 feet away; much like the hidden chip in US currency which can be scanned at airports. Recently, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) got caught using frequent shopper cards from food chains to “see if customers purchased tainted meat products,”…of course, done without anyone’s knowledge.

Detroit wants to save itself by shrinking…and the reason I mention this

DETROIT – Detroit, the very symbol of American industrial might for most of the 20th century, is drawing up a radical renewal plan that calls for turning large swaths of this now-blighted, rusted-out city back into the fields and farmland that existed before the automobile.

Operating on a scale never before attempted in this country, the city would demolish houses in some of the most desolate sections of Detroit and move residents into stronger neighborhoods. Roughly a quarter of the 139-square-mile city could go from urban to semi-rural.

Near downtown, fruit trees and vegetable farms would replace neighborhoods that are an eerie landscape of empty buildings and vacant lots. Suburban commuters heading into the city center might pass through what looks like the countryside to get there. Surviving neighborhoods in the birthplace of the auto industry would become pockets in expanses of green.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100308/ap_on_bi_ge/us_downsizing_detroit

Our pipe dream…

It’s been our goal to acquire 5-15 acres of farmland and turn it into a teaching farm. Our plan includes hiring those who know how to build wind turbines, solar panels, small animal livestock, gardening and the like and film them as works in progress and then share those DVDs with others.

As our country evolves (some might say ‘devolves) into city-states and the push for green living and renewable energy becomes our mandate, this idea seems more important than ever as most folks haven’t a clue about DIY self-sufficiency. Even the IRS (you have to call them and run your idea past them before they’ll send you the necessary forms for requesting non-profit status) thought our idea had a lot of merit.

All of this requires capital and since we’re not incorporated as a non-profit, grants for such an undertaking are non-existent. We estimate it will cost us $3500 just to file the various state and federal paperwork, legal fees and so on in order to qualify for grants. Then there would be the cost of acquiring the land and materials necessary to for the projects and there would be costs for getting the experts here to construct the projects, filming and editing and duplication. Any suggestions?

Daylight Wasting Time

Remember on the 14th to change your clock either forward, backward or into another time warp; I can never recall which. Having lived in AZ for many years, it was nice not to worry about changing my clocks as it’s one of the few states, which remains the same all year long.

Every study I’ve seen indicates this is a waste of time as it doesn’t truly save time and in some cases, it actually creates a dangerous situation for school kids as drivers can’t see them in the wee hours.

I think this is a throwback to an earlier time in our history and it helped the farmers; who does it help now?

Nice Resource from AARP-Work Sharing

Work sharing helps employers avoid layoffs during a downturn by cutting work hours and spreading the remaining work among existing employees, who receive pro-rated unemployment benefits. Work sharing may be particularly beneficial for older workers, who often find it more difficult than younger workers to find a job after a layoff. Seventeen states have active programs that permit the use of unemployment funds to support work sharing. In addition, the governments of a number of developed countries promote work sharing as a way to save jobs in a weak economy.

Griping online-what to do first

Fortunately, there is good news as well. Social networking sites and tools amplify your angry voice thousands of times over, and give you a reasonable chance of knocking Goliath on his butt. "Consumers are empowered by social networking in a way we've never seen before," says, Jeremiah Owyang, a Web strategist and a partner in the Altimeter Group.

But be warned. Getting attention is not the same as getting results. "It's easier to call attention to a broad social issue than it is for an individual consumer to resolve a grievance," says Joe Ridout, manager of consumer services for San Francisco Consumer Action.

Assemble Your Emergency Kit

From Mother Earth News magazine, by Barbara Pleasant

Most of us have experienced short-term power outages and have learned we can get through a day without power. Even most of the 50 million people in the northeast United States and southeast Canada who lost power during last summer's historic grid collapse found their lights back on within a day or so.

But prolonged power outages are a real possibility after a serious hurricane or winter storm. After all, it doesn't take much to bring the grid crashing down: In the summer of 1996, a tree fell on a power line in Idaho, setting in motion a blackout that affected 15 Western states.

I'm still trying to forget nine powerless days my family endured a few years ago: the smell of unflushed toilets, the power plays for batteries between father and daughter, the gas-station chicken fingers we had for Christmas dinner. Last fall, I devoted a week to preparing a simple and inexpensive emergency kit that will help my family ride out 14 days without electricity. This kit gives me peace of mind because now I know the next blackout won't be a nightmare.

Saving Safe Water

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends having 2 quarts per person per day for drinking water, and 2 quarts per person per day for washing, flushing toilets (keep reading) and other purposes. And don't forget the water needs of your animals. My 60-pound dog drinks at least half a gallon a day.

Commercially produced bottled water lasts for a year when stored in a cool, dark place. But you don't have to buy bottled water. Instead, store your own in thoroughly cleaned 2-liter plastic bottles. Make sure bacteria or other microorganisms can't contaminate your stored drinking water; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends mixing in four drops of unscented chlorine bleach per quart of water just before capping the containers, although some sources disagree with this advice. If you do use bleach, check the label to make sure that the only active ingredient is sodium hypochlorite.

If a disaster catches you by surprise and you don't have stored water, fill up every available container - including your bathtub - right away. A backup plan is to melt ice from your freezer. After that, drain the water from your water heater (but first turn it off at the circuit box). To eliminate bacteria and other parasites in water of questionable quality, you have three options: Bring it to a full boil for 1 minute, filter it, or treat it with iodine or chlorine - both are available as tablets, or you can use plain chlorine bleach.

Missing Bathrooms

Even if the power is off, you can force a toilet to flush by pouring water into the tank. To determine how much water your toilet needs to flush just turn off the water supply, flush it once to empty the tank and then measure how much water you pour into the tank in order to execute one good flush. The best way to force flushes is to pour the amount of water needed into the reservoir tank, hold down the handle and let it rip. Melted ice or snow makes fine flushing water.

But in some situations, such as during a flood, your city's sewer system or your household's septic system may not work. To be prepared, store materials to make a "sawdust potty" in your emergency kit as well. All you need is organic material such as sawdust, peat moss or soil, and a 5-gallon bucket with a lid. After you use the potty, just pour a layer of organic material in the bucket and put the lid on.

Food and Other Supplies

Set aside cabinet space or a storage bin to store canned foods; unopened peanut butter and jelly; dried fruits and vegetables; crackers and hard candy. When stored in airtight containers, these foods will keep for a year. If your backup generator isn't powering the refrigerator, raid it for the food, but don't open the door more than necessary.

When a blackout hits, immediately make necessary phone calls. Tell an out-of-town relative you're OK and prepared for the emergency; ask him or her to pass on the news to other loved ones. Then turn off your cell phone to conserve its battery. Use a car charger (if you can safely get to your car) if your phone battery is low.

If you have an old cell phone that you no longer use, save it for your emergency kit. By law, every cell phone can call 911 (as long as it can get a signal), even if you do not have current service with a wireless company. A small battery-operated or crank radio is another must-have. Weather radios aren't much for entertainment, but they are an excellent source of information. With any type of radio, playing it at low volume is the best way to conserve the battery.

A blackout is one of those times when attitude really is everything. My emergency kit includes a deck of cards, paper and pencils, and a jigsaw puzzle. My teenager's plan includes drawing, lots of reading and making a scrapbook.

Measured in peace of mind, the little time and money I invested in blackout preparedness was well worth it. My stockpiled supplies provide reassuring security, so now I can look forward to the future with confidence rather than fear.

Can You Settle Credit Card Debt for Pennies?

We have all seen and heard the ads that shout, "Secrets banks don't want you to know," "You have a right to settle your debts for pennies on the dollar" and "President Obama has a stimulus plan provision that allows you to eliminate credit card debt" ... if only you will call the 800 number in the ad.

People ask me if there is any truth to the ads with an air of skepticism that always contains a whiff of hope that there just might be some secret way that debts can be erased, eliminated or at least shrunk. I can't blame them. I still buy the occasional ticket when the Power Ball lottery gets big enough, like $15 million is just too small for me to bother with. Well, after 19 years of working with families who have experienced crushing credit card debt, demoralizing reversals of fortune or sometimes just plain unrestrained spending silliness, I can tell you that there is no magic wand, no silver bullet, no credit fairy. More at:

Get Dental Care for Less Money

Jordan Braverman, MPH

Dental care is rarely covered by Medicare... few retirees have dental insurance... and those who do have dental insurance often find that their coverage is very limited.

Dental bills average around $677 per year for the typical senior, and a major procedure, such as a root canal or a dental implant, can push that tab into four or even five figures.

INSURANCE

Insurance can help pay dental bills. Options to consider...

Dental insurance. If you have access to subsidized group dental insurance through an employer or former employer, it likely is worth having. If not, the case for dental insurance is less compelling.

Dental insurance typically features copayments as high as 50%... annual benefit caps in the low four figures... often long waiting periods before expensive procedures are covered... and usually only 80% coverage if your dentist is out of network. Dental insurance premiums for seniors are about $480 per year for individual plans. That’s a steep price for such limited coverage, but not necessarily an awful deal if you have reason to believe that you will require significant dental work within a few years, perhaps because your dentist has warned you that a major procedure cannot be put off too much longer.

If you do decide to sign up for dental insurance, consider the policies offered through AARP. Rates on AARP dental policies often are a bit lower than what comparable individual dental coverage would cost elsewhere.

More information: Visit www3.deltadentalins.com/aarp/.

If you do have dental insurance, confirm that your dentist will accept it before agreeing to any procedure. Work with him/her to get the most out of the insurance if he does.

Example: If the dental work you require is not an emergency and significantly exceeds your coverage’s annual benefits cap, ask your dentist if the work -- and the bill -- could be spread out over two or more plan years.

Private health insurance. If you do not have dental insurance but have private health insurance in addition to Medicare, this health insurance could include some basic dental benefits. Read the plan literature or call the insurance company’s customer service department to find out.

Medical flexible spending accounts (FSAs). FSAs can substantially trim the effective cost of dental care by allowing patients to pay for health-care bills -- including dental bills -- with pretax dollars. Unfortunately for retirees, FSAs are available only to employees whose employers offer FSAs as part of their benefits packages.

HAGGLING

Dentists’ bills often are negotiable -- but only if you discuss costs before having the dental work done. Ask if you can get a senior discount or a cash discount if you pay in cash. Either of these appeals could net you savings of 5% to 10%.

Call other dentists’ offices to ask their prices for the procedure. If you find a better rate, tell your dentist that you are on a tight budget and ask if he can match the lower price.

Get a second opinion before agreeing to any major procedure. There’s a chance that your dentist could be recommending an expensive procedure that is not necessary. Have your dental files, including the most recent test results and X-rays, forwarded to the dentist who will provide this second opinion so that you do not have to pay to have these repeated. You will have to pay for the second opinion, but the cost of a simple office visit is so much lower than the cost of an elaborate dental procedure that it can be a smart investment if there is any chance that the original dentist was wrong.

If you have a LIMITED INCOME

You probably can get dental care even if your financial resources are very limited...

Medicaid. Medicaid is available only to those with low incomes and limited assets. Eligibility rules and program benefits vary by state. In most states, Medicaid provides at least basic dental care for those living near or below the poverty line.

To find out if you qualify, contact your state’s Medicaid Office. (Visit www.benefits.gov, select Medicaid/Medicare from the Benefits Quick Search menu, then choose your home state. Or call 800-333-4636 for a contact phone number for your state’s Medicaid office.)

Helpful: Nursing homes are legally required to arrange for dental care for residents who use Medicaid to pay for their stays. That typically means that they must either bring a dentist to the nursing home or transport the resident to a dentist’s office to receive care.

Local and state dental associations. Many have programs that provide dental services for free or reduced rates to those in financial need. Services are provided by dentists who volunteer their time. Eligibility requirements vary.

State and local dental associations can be found on the Web site of the American Dental Association (ADA) -- at www.ada.org, select "Dental Organizations" off the menu, then check both the "Constituent (State) Directory" and the "Component (Local) Directory" to find relevant associations. Or call the ADA at 312-440-2500 and ask for your state dental association’s phone number.

Example: The Connecticut Dental Association sponsors an annual "Mission of Mercy" program that provides free cleanings, extractions and fillings on a first-come, first-served basis. Unlike most programs of this sort, Connecticut’s Mission of Mercy does not require proof of limited income. See the Connecticut State Dental Association’s Web site for more information (www.csda.com/ctmom/ctmom4.html).

Public or nonprofit dental clinics. Available in many regions, these typically charge very low rates, perhaps linked to the patients’ ability to pay. In some cases, treatment is free. Your area Agency on Aging should be able to direct you to any dental clinics in your region and might know of other local low-cost dental options for seniors. (Call the US Administration on Aging’s Eldercare Locator, 800-677-1116, or use the Locator on the Web at www.eldercare.gov to find your local Agency on Aging if you cannot locate it in your phone book.) Your local or state dental association also might know of area clinics.

MONEY-SAVING OPTIONS

If you are too well off to qualify for low-income dental programs, consider these options...

Local dental colleges. Performed for perhaps half the usual cost, the work is done by dental students under the supervision of qualified instructors. The quality of the dental care tends to be good... however, a dental school might not provide a full range of dental services. The American Dental Education Association Web site can help you find dental schools in your region. (At www.adea.org, click "About ADEA" then "Who We Are," and "Predoctoral Dental Education Programs.") Typing "dental schools" and the name of your state into Google.com also can help you find any schools in your region.

Retail dental centers. Usually located in shopping malls, they typically charge 10% to 20% less than traditional dentists’ offices. Thanks to:

Grow your own food -- in a bag, in a truck, anywhere

Gardening isn't just for people with lots of land. You can raise your own tasty crops in the smallest and oddest of containers. If you have access to some sun, plus time to water and care for seedlings, every little spot in the world is your garden.

About.com has tips for growing a head of lettuce in a Whole Foods reusable grocery bag. Typically, these bags are reused when you buy salad fixings at the store, but why not use them to raise fresh salad at home? Doesn't look that hard.

In fact, an entire Flickr group is devoted to Grow Bag Gardening. People around the country are growing potatoes in potato sacks, fertilizing plants in bags of fertilizer, and even raising crops in tin cans.

The container gardening site at Texas A&M also suggests using a cake pan as the site to grow green onions, radishes, or beets. What a great way to use an old pan that's scratched or warped or to use something found at the thrift store. More at:

8 Sneaky Ways to Raise Taxes

President Obama's budget proposal would raise taxes on upper-income earners by $969 billion over the next 10 years, yet the federal debt would continue to explode. To boost government revenues further, he'd raise an additional $122 billion from multinational firms, $90 billion from banks, $37 billion from oil companies, and $24 billion from hedge funds and private-equity firms. All told, that's nearly $1.2 trillion. And it would barely make a dent. We'd still have huge deficits, and the national debt would keep growing.

At least 35 states face their own budget shortfalls this year, with revenue in many states coming in below projections that were weak to start with, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. When federal stimulus spending winds down in 2011, many states anticipate a "cliff effect," in which their revenues plunge. That means new revenue will have to come from somewhere—and there aren't enough rich people to provide all the funds. "It's inevitable that the government will have to find a way to have a truly middle-income tax increase," says Clint Stretch of consulting firm Deloitte Tax. "The trick is: how?

How to Live Happily on 75 Percent Less

Nine months after getting laid off, Catherine Goerz once again became part of the rush-hour commute—in a way she'd never anticipated.

To pick up extra cash, Goerz took a temporary job handing out fliers touting the benefits of public transportation in the San Francisco subway system. Occasionally she'd bump into people she knew from her former job as a creative producer for a Bay Area communications company. "They're in their corporate clothes," she recalls, "and I'm in this silly T-shirt and hat. 'Cathy, is that you?' they'd ask. 'What are you doing here?' Ugh."

The Great Recession—which is technically over, economists insist—may be morphing into a broader epoch: the Great Humbling. Millions of Americans who felt prosperous just a few years ago are now coping with long-term unemployment, sharp cutbacks in living standards, foreclosure, bankruptcy, and a deep sense of failure. That could persist for years. "This is not like earlier recessions, where things fell, then they bounced back to where they used to be," says Dennis Jacobe, chief economist for the Gallup polling organization. "We haven't seen this before. It's the only time this has happened since the Great Depression."

SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES

Some of the best social networking sites for adults...

Eons (www.eons.com) is a social network for older adults interested in leading healthy and fulfilling lives. One of the most popular features of the site is the Longevity Calculator, which asks a series of health-related questions and then estimates your life expectancy. Among the popular social groups at Eons are those that discuss spirituality, pop music and saving money.

AARP Online Community (www.aarp.org/onlinecommunity) is a new feature of the country’s largest organization for seniors and is growing strong. As it grows, the social network will connect more and more adults interested in such subjects as entertainment, education, health, careers, sports and volunteering. You don’t have to be an AARP member to take part in its social networking.

Gather (www.gather.com) is a social network with an especially large number of interest groups, including those for adults interested in horror movies, baking bread or writing poetry. When members use Gather, they build up credits that can be redeemed at retailers such as Amazon.com, the Gap, Starbucks and Target.

SPECIAL INTERESTS

Many social networking sites are now aimed at people with specific interests...

Literature. At Goodreads (www.goodreads.com), you can network with people who love to read books and want to exchange information about authors, best sellers and publishing industry events.

Women’s issues. iVillage Connect (http://connect.ivillage.com) is one of the few social networking sites devoted solely to women, covering a wide range of topics from health, careers and relationships to shopping and style.

Careers. Of the many sites for career-minded networkers, LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) is one of the most popular. Members exchange information about career interests and skill sets, post their résumés and invite people they have met in business to join their online network of business colleagues. Your network expands as you are introduced to other businesspeople -- a bit like exchanging business cards, except it is done online in this network.

Personal finance. ValueForum (www.valueforum.com) is one of a growing number of specialized networking sites that charge for membership. For about $21 a month, members exchange information about their personal experiences with a wide variety of timely investments, including municipal bonds, energy-related stocks, real estate, foreign equities and gold.

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once observed, "The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."

Parting Shots

I’m an optimist at heart, but…

The politicians in Washington tell us the economy is recovering. Well, maybe so ... as long as you don't need a job. The problems facing this country — in debt, energy, lost jobs, unbalanced budgets and more — continue to mount.

I do believe the American Century is over with. Washington policies during the past 30 plus years have shattered the dream which was…more and more foreign countries now exceed the US in terms of policy, innovation, and overall care of its population. Few other countries are doing much better economically (Great Britain can no longer finance its national debt, Greece, and Portugal are in trouble, the Euro seems challenged, etc.).

Greece's financial troubles have shaken the European Union and its shared euro currency, whose rules were supposed to prevent governments from running up too much debt. Rioting is already taking place…can it happen here too?

If our country goes bankrupt (technically, it already is) there are many scenarios, which could take place. Chief among those would be government defaults on military and government pensions, bankrupt state governments, massive layoffs, cut backs in Social Security and Medicaid and more. In short, chaos.

A new America will emerge, but a far different one than what we grew up with. Some areas of the country will do just fine – those, which are more self-sufficient. Urban areas such as Washington DC, might not do well. We may become a nation of city-states. It’s anyone’s guess!

There’s always the slight chance I’m going to hell for sharing all of this anyhow!

Yours for better living,

Government Spending Binge is keeping the economy alive…for now

The so-called "Great Recession" has left Americans depending on the government dole like never before.

Without record levels of welfare, unemployment and other government benefits as well as tax cuts last year, the income of U.S. households would have plunged by an astonishing $723 billion — more than four times the record $167 billion drop reported last month by the Commerce Department.

Moreover, for the first time since the Great Depression, Americans took more aid from the government than they paid in taxes. Ironically, the Senate voted not to send $250 to the elderly and veterans and disabled (who lost their Social Security COLA raise this year – the first time since 1975…guess the cost of living didn’t go up)!?

Inst for Justice Offers Assistance

Founded in 1991, the Institute for Justice is what a civil liberties law firm should be. As our nation's only libertarian public interest law firm, we engage in cutting-edge litigation and advocacy both in the courts of law and in the court of public opinion on behalf of individuals whose most basic rights are denied by the government--like the right to earn an honest living, private property rights, and the right to free speech, especially in the areas of commercial and Internet speech. As Wired magazine said, the Institute for Justice “helps individuals subject to wacky government regulations.”

Simply put, we challenge the government when it stands in the way of people trying to earn an honest living, when it unconstitutionally takes away individuals' property, when bureaucrats instead of parents dictate the education of children, and when government stifles speech. We seek a rule of law under which individuals can control their destinies as free and responsible members of society.

Wholesale clubs grow as supermarkets slide

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A steady stream of shoppers looking for deals on necessities has helped wholesale club operators Costco Wholesale Corp. and BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. deliver profit gains while many of their grocery competitors struggle.

6 ways supermarkets trick you to spend more money

Beware of the sneaky ways grocery stores spur spending, and follow our tips to outsmart the system.

1.      ENTRANCE AREA
The trap: Stores internally refer to this as the “chill zone.” And with good reason: This spot primes shoppers with impulse buys like DVDs, bulk goods and holiday products that appeal to them emotionally, says Kit Yarrow, a psychology and marketing professor at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. It’s designed to make you consider buying, say, a carton of soda for an impromptu barbecue.
What to do: You might think your best bet is to put on blinders here, but that’ll come back to bite you later on in your shopping trip. Instead, let yourself linger and see these products for what they are: filler items that aren’t on your list. “If you pause now, you’re less likely to impulse-buy the item in the store later on,” says Art Markman, a cognitive science professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Get more tips at:

7 Genius Ways to Make Extra Cash Fast!

If you're in a money crunch (and who isn't?), you can do one of two things: Sulk or go out and earn some extra dough. We vote for the second. Here, inventive ways to line your purse with a little more green— and five things you should never scrimp on.

1.      Sell stuff on eBay.Clothes, exercise gear, books, housewares — anything you've got lying around that's in decent shape can be put up for sale on eBay or another Internet auction site such as craigslist.org. Post decent digital photos of your items so browsers can really see what you're pawning off; credibility is key to making a sale. Also, ask that the buyer pay the shipping charges, not you.

2. Become a dog-walker or pet-sitter. Rates for walking a single pooch at a time run from $10 to $15 per half-hour. If you critter-sit at a client's house while they're at work or on vacation, you can make even more dough. Post ads for yourself at veterinarian offices and the Humane Society, and put signs up at dog runs to spread the word.

Unable to afford attorney…save a buck where you can!

In the age of the Internet, do-it-yourself divorces are not new. Couples download forms from online companies selling state-specific divorce papers for a fee. But online forms aren't officially approved by Michigan courts, and judges have to tell some couples to file the paperwork again.

At the Oakland County courthouse, couples are often referred to the law library, where a how-to manual on divorce, several inches thick, is handed out at least 15 times a day.

"This is the single most popular book in the library," said Laura Mancini, the county's library director.

Proposed USPS Action Plan May Impact Ecommerce Sellers

The USPS published a plan on Tuesday to cope with a declining volume of mail, and it could have a significant impact on ecommerce. The USPS projected a $238 billion shortfall in 2020 due to "unprecedented" volume declines. A possible move to a 5-day delivery schedule and likely fee changes could mean that online sellers who currently use the U.S. Postal Service might have to change the way they do business to satisfy consumer expectations.

Postmaster General John E. Potter's plan, called "Ensuring a Viable Postal Service for America," includes cost cutting, increased productivity, and an array of legislative and regulatory changes that he said were necessary to maintain a viable United States Postal Service.

The self-supporting government enterprise said it projects mail volume to fall from 177 billion in 2009 to 150 billion in 2020. According to the report, "That represents a 37 percent decline in First-Class Mail alone. Revenue contributed by First-Class Mail will plummet from 51 percent today to about 35 percent in 2020."

The new plan calls for adjusting delivery days "to better reflect current mail volumes and customer habits." The USPS said survey data shows the public favors 5-day deliver over using taxpayer funds and other alternatives. The plan also calls for providing services at locations that are more convenient to customers, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, retail centers, and office supply stores: "Increase and enhance customer access through partnerships, self-service kiosks and a world-class Website."

The President of the 300,000-member National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) opposed the proposal in a statement on Tuesday. Fredric Rolando said, "I do not believe that weakening our commitment of six-day service to the public will enhance the long-term position of the Postal Service as a critical element in our nation's economic infrastructure. In view of the January report released by the postal Inspector General that showed that the USPS was overcharged by $75 billion for postal pension costs, Congress instead should take immediate steps to correct the error."

NOTE: A number of years ago I flew to Washington to give a speech and I sat next to a postal governor. She explained to me their biggest financial challenge were there huge pension obligations. One only needs to work for the USPS for 20 years to collect a full pension with benefits…nice gig compared to the private sector.

Building a 12-Month Stockpile

Where I store it:

In my basement and pantry – there is nothing but dishes in my kitchen cabinets. I don’t like clutter, and I use lots of Tupperware items to store non-perishables in my pantry and to help organize.

What got me started:

Since we farm we never have a regular income. Most people have a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly paycheck; we do not. At certain times of the year it’s all going out. Our income comes in huge chunks at different times of the year. For that reason when the first of the year hits (or a large chunk of income comes in), it’s time to stock up. I usually buy a year’s supply, if it’s something that will keep. We’re 10 miles from the nearest store, and I don’t like running to the store for one item to fix a meal. I like being able to get everything I need from the pantry and freezer. We buy milk and bread once or twice a week.

What I stockpile:

I buy a years supply (Plus one or two extra depending on the item) of shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper and paper towels, deoderant, laundry detergent and softener, dishwashing detergent, vacuum sealer rolls, trash bags, vacuum cleaner bags etc., and other non perishables such as canned goods, and baking items.

Nine Shocking New Predictions for 2010-2012
With Martin Weiss, Richard Mogey and Monty Agarwal
(Edited Transcript)

Martin Weiss: The forecasts we made last year are striking at an accelerating pace, as three new and dangerous crises have raised their heads:

First, the White House has announced federal deficits that are far worse than any prior estimates — $1.6 trillion for 2010 ... $1.3 trillion for 2011 ... and continuing massive deficits for the entire decade.

This is already sending shock waves of fear throughout the globe. It has prompted Moody's to issue a stern warning about America's credit rating. And it's raising the specter of a global collapse in long-term sovereign debt. In a moment, we'll take a look at the enormous implications this has for your finances and investments.

Second, global investors are attacking. They're scanning the globe for the weakest links — the countries with the biggest deficits — and they're dumping that country's assets. First, they attacked Greece. Then they attacked Portugal and Spain.

Inevitably, they will also unleash their fury on the one country in the world with the biggest deficits of all: The United States of America. And in a moment, we'll see how these attacks now threaten every dollar you have saved and invested.

Third, we have an unprecedented crisis of confidence among U.S. taxpayers and investors. For the first time in our lives, millions of U.S. citizens are taking to the streets in protest — openly rebelling against Washington! Millions of Americans are fed up with bungling politicians, bureaucrats, and bankers.

U.S. Deficit: Higher Taxes Needed to Cut Rising Debt

Never mind about mortgaging the future. By running up a monster deficit as it struggles to keep the economy growing, the Obama Administration is setting the stage for sharply higher taxes down the road.

Of course, it's not an absolute certainty. The easier option is even more quantitative easing - a euphemism for printing money, which is a dirty phrase economists never like to use. This would devalue the country's currency and sovereign debt, triggering a cycle of hyperinflation of the likes the U.S. has never seen.

Higher taxes are coming soon, however - and they will hurt. By some estimates, the tax burden on Americans could double before the end of this decade. The only question is: What form will these new taxes take?

As Washington ponders its taxation options, it might also wish to cast its gaze toward the NYSE and Nasdaq, whose companies add very little to the public till. In fact, their contribution as a percentage of GDP ranks in the bottom quartile among OECD nations' figures.

Americans will get their butt kicked even more through…

Stealth Taxation-Till Debt Do Us Part!

Better than any thief known to history, our government steals your money and most of the time, you don’t even notice. This is the time of year when we tackle our horrendous income tax paperwork; yet, few of us realize how the government fleeces us everyday.

If you ever travel do you ever notice the ‘hidden’ taxes on your car rental invoice, your hotel bill, your taxi ride? Have you ever noticed your phone bill? The government tacks on all kinds of stupid fees such as a deaf relay charge, excise tax, state gross receipts tax, Emergency 911 fee, state fees and so on. A $20 monthly bill becomes $35! Nebraska alone tacks on 25% to your cell phone bill.

You also pay similar government fees for heat and A/C, water bill, electric bill and more.

Your employer pays a ton of taxes you may not be aware of either in the form of various payroll taxes. About 37% of federal taxes are hidden which in turn means lower wages and reduced business investment (aka: jobs).

About 40% of your liquor and wine is a tax, more than $1.25 of taxes is tacked onto a package of cigarettes, there’s an ‘entertainment tax’ placed on tickets to theme parks and so on. It’s a never-ending stream of theft and deception. Coming inflation will make your money worth less and is another form of hidden taxation… no wonder the Tea Party is growing in popularity.

Then politicians turn around and spend billions on various pork packages, which seldom create any good for the average person. I don’t know whatever happened to our Founding Fathers concept of a “limited government,” but it’s pretty certain neither Republicans or Democrats seem to recall that notion! These same party leaders, have for the past 30 years, left our country out of touch, out of reach and out of money in terms of remaining the world’s policeman and dangerously in hock to foreign governments…all of which will haunt us.

I like Congressman Paul Ryan’s (Wisc) plan… has a nicely targeted sense of humor. For those who can’t bear to part with today’s elephantine tax code, he leaves it in place, and anyone who loves it can still use it. For the rest of us: Single filers would pay 10% on income up to $50,000 ($100,000 for joint filers) and 25% thereafter, with a generous standard deduction and personal exemption ($39,000 for a family of four). That’s it. No loopholes, deductions, credits or exclusions. Fill out the postcard and mail it in.

Increase Seen in Anti-Government Actions

Recently, we learned about a man who crashed his airplane into an IRS building because he became frustrated over their actions. In Minneapolis, Federal agents raided a ‘suspected’ internet firm stating it was involved in a Ponzi scheme. Serving a warrant in Fresno, CA became deadly for three law enforcement officials. Seems there is a lot of anger from citizens over ‘law enforcement tactics.’

The average local law enforcement man or woman is honest and hard working. As one AZ sheriff told me, “It’s the feds that give all of us a bad name…they’re more interested in ‘protecting’ government turf than citizens rights.”

Remember, in the United States, the American people in business have no protection over the federal governments investigative branch. Without absolute facts American businesses are at the whim of federal agencies which can freeze bank accounts, take computers and close offices with nothing more than an allegation. In many cases, your business is guilty until proven innocent…that’s the way it works in our free country.

Cleaner Energy from Firewood

From Mother Earth News, by Amanda Kimble-Evans

Wood, the oldest fuel source known to humans, may be about to experience a renaissance, thanks to rising oil and gas costs combined with shrinking bank accounts. Ultra-efficient, ultra-clean advanced wood combustion technology and fast-growing “perpetual” fuel woods can, on the micro level, bring increased home heating security for landowners and, on the macro level, create a regenerative fuel source for electricity generation.

How does fuel wood combat climate change? Wood is often considered “carbon neutral,” because growing it pulls as much carbon dioxide out of the air as is released into the atmosphere when it’s burned. So, unlike gas or oil, it releases no net carbon. It is a closed-loop energy source, simply recirculating the carbon dioxide already within the Earth’s carbon cycle.

An analysis led by Daniel D. Richter, professor of soils and forest ecology at Duke University, proposes we are missing a key strategy in our search for sustainable energy solutions. Richter says we need to consider advanced wood combustion, which he defines as “automated, high-efficiency wood-fired energy generation systems with strict air pollution control.”

The analysis was detailed by Richter and a multidisciplinary team of experts in the March 13, 2009 issue of Science magazine, and points out that creating thermal and electrical energy with advanced wood combustion has been growing quickly throughout Europe. “These facilities release remarkably low quantities of air pollutants and have system-wide thermal efficiencies approaching 90 percent,” Richter says. According to the article, the cost of wood fuel is several times cheaper than fossil fuel costs (per unit of energy produced).

The authors of the Science article say the United States is well-suited for sustaining a wood-energy economy. Yet currently, energy from wood provides only about 2 to 3 percent of total U.S. energy consumption. This is about half of the potential annual sustainable wood supply available to us for power generation.

The report also identifies “waste” wood as an untapped asset, estimating that 30 million tons of urban wood per year can be safely burned for energy. For example, the District Energy program in St. Paul, Minn., burns 250,000 tons of waste wood and other biomass per year to provide heating, cooling and other energy to part of the city.

Although wood supplies just a fraction of today’s national energy use, the sustainable wood supply of the United States could easily produce more than the 3 percent that is supplied by our current hydroelectric sources.

Perpetual Fuel Wood

Sustainable harvests from existing forests could be supplemented with “perpetual fuel wood” (fast-growing, hedge-like trees used in Europe).

“People are talking about biomass plantations, efficient burning and super insulation, but older, more accessible strategies not being talked about involve coppiced and pollarded fuel-wood hedges,” says Ben Falk, founder of Whole Systems Design (www.wholesystemsdesign.com), a Vermont-based sustainable land development company. Coppicing and pollarding are the practices of harvesting firewood from species that resprout from their base or part way up the trunk, capitalizing on the existing energy of the root structure.

Falk and his team have focused on the massive U.S. interstate highway system as a possible site for these hedges. “There are more than 46,000 miles of underutilized interstate corridor landscape,” he says. “Much of the median and surrounding acreage is mowed, which requires huge quantities of fossil fuel, time and labor, and doesn’t offer any actual yields.”

Falk also finds great promise in the ability of coppicing to sequester carbon dioxide. “Each time you cut back a tree, root dieback releases carbon into the soil. Coppiced systems act as large-scale, solar-powered carbon pumps transporting carbon from the atmosphere into the soil — where it belongs.”

Possibly the most attractive selling point of advanced wood combustion is that it’s more quickly and easily implemented than solar or wind energy systems. A number of U.S. cities and public institutions are already integrating advanced wood combustion into their green energy plans, including the Fuels for Schools program in Vermont and various district energy programs in Idaho, Ohio and South Carolina.

Wood Fuel for Your Home

The Science article didn’t broach the question of home-scale fuel wood for heat, but Falk is excited about the possibilities. “You can grow a lot of your own food calories almost anywhere in this country,” he says. “But your own heat? It’s difficult, but it can be done.”

The question is, how many acres would you need? According to John Gulland, a wood heat expert and MOTHER EARTH NEWS contributing editor, “In many regions, a healthy, well-managed woodlot can perpetually yield half a cord of wood per acre per year. An average home typically requires about 5 cords per winter, which can be sustainably harvested from about 10 acres. A well-insulated, modest-size home using a high-efficiency woodstove might need only 2 cords, cut from 4 acres, per season.”

Falk says the question is also about what type of renewable heating option folks can afford. “Most people can’t afford to retrofit their home for solar heating. Harvesting local firewood for a high-efficiency stove is a better option in many cases.”

The key to implementing these positive projections for fuel woods is a move toward a more localized energy framework. “Everyone says wood is ‘carbon neutral,’ but if you’re moving massive amounts of heavy material — chipping, cutting, logging, hauling — then it won’t be a carbon neutral process,” Falk says. Most of the European growth has been on the community scale.

The Science article analysis predicts that community-based models will recycle money back into the local economy with new jobs and new sources of income for local landowners.

Richter and his colleagues add that advanced wood combustion systems help communities transition to other renewable energies. And, according to Falk, “While we don’t yet have all the answers needed for large-scale transformation toward regenerative resource use, there are many transitional technologies accessible to us right now. By looking across cultures and regions, we can begin to adapt them to the challenges we face today.”

When You Should, Shouldn’t Give Out Your Social Security Number

Some Legitimately Need It—to Others, Learn to Say ‘No’

Your Social Security number is one of the keys to your financial health. It’s a unique indentifier lenders use to assess your creditworthiness. It’s also exactly what a would-be thief needs to apply for a credit card, mortgage, car loan or job in your name.

If you’re like most Americans, it’s also something you give out all too frequently.

“As with so many procedures in the business world, your Social Security number is something that many companies ask for, so no one really questions it,” says James Van Dyke, president of Javelin Strategy & Research, a research firm that tracks financial services topics. “But giving out your Social Security number is definitely a practice consumers should think twice about.”

Case in point: A recent Javelin Strategy & Research report—the 2009 ID Fraud Survey—found that, among identity theft victims, 38 percent said the perpetrator had obtained their Social Security number and used it in the crime. “It’s certainly logical to say that you could eliminate 38 percent of your risk of identity theft by limiting access to your Social Security number,” says Van Dyke.

‘Your Socialist Slave Number, Please’

Still, saying it and doing it are two different things. Many of the forms you encounter during the day—at doctor’s offices, at the dentist, at your child’s school—ask for Social Security numbers. Retailers may ask for it, too, when accepting a check for payment or before issuing check cashing privileges. Potential employers also need it, and they may even want a copy of the actual card, says Linda Foley, founder of the San Diego-based Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC). You’ll also be asked for it at your local Department of Motor Vehicles, car dealerships, pawnshops, drugstores—even at the airport, should you lose your luggage, she says. In fact, you may be surprised at how far-reaching this practice is, says Foley. More at:

Who is the Middle Class?

Have you been wondering about the lack of serious coverage by the media of the financial crisis facing the middle class? As David Sirota shows us, the media doesn’t seem to understand who the middle class are:

Last year, the New York Times told us it’s difficult for people to make ends meet on $500,000 a year, and the Washington Post insisted that it’s hard to “squeak by” on $300,000 a year. Now the Denver Post insists that if you make $250,000 a year, you may only be “middle class”

Where does utter disconnect with reality come from? And why does it exist?

Media voices perpetuate these myths of the impoverished wealthy, in part, because many media voices are themselves wealthy — and there’s no more powerful class solidarity than that which exists among the rich.

Indeed, the wealthy don’t just convince themselves they aren’t wealthy, they try to create the perception among themselves, politicians and the public at large that they are “middle class” and thus persecuted by taxes. Put another way, the real danger of the New York Times, Washington Post and Denver Post article floating the idea of the wealthy as not wealthy is in skewing our political debate over economics. If someone making $500,000 is just “getting by,” and someone making $300,000 is barely “squeaking by” and someone making $250,000 is in the persecuted “middle class,” then having any fact-based discussion about tax inequities becomes that much harder.

Watch out for falling home prices

Despite signs that the real estate market might be lurching forward, prices are expected to fall further this year and next.

The average home price in the United States will fall by about 6% by September 2011, according to a joint report between Fiserv and Moody’s Economy.com. And that’s after plunging more than 27% in the past three years.

Most of the projected home price decline will occur during the usually slow summer months of 2010. After that, prices should begin to stabilize, according to Fiserv, and stay almost flat through fall of 2011.

The main reason for continued decline, according to Mark Zandi, economist and co-founder of Economy.com, is foreclosures—the same thing that’s plagued markets for the past three years.

BREAKING NEWS

A recent Toyota internal memo was "leaked" to the Drudge Report. Among the memo's conclusions is that the Obama Administration and its "activist" Congressional crusaders are "not industry friendly." And while Toyota's executives on the Hill are remaining calm in the face of withering Congressional temper-tantrums (two hearings by two committees), the fact that company operatives leaked the memo is a clear message to Congress: Be careful how far you take this.

I do not think the political class are listening to the warning Toyota's upper management have subtly telegraphed to Congress.

Meanwhile, here's the real story you won't generally see reported:

  • Toyota is being singled out by the congressional majority because its employees have rejected unionization. Ford Motor Company recalled some 4 million cars last year alone (Toyota's recall has so far been limited to 650,000 cars).
  • The defective gas pedals and floor mats Congress is squawking about are actually entirely American-made! In part to appease the politicians over the years, Toyota subcontracted their construction to U.S.-based companies.
  • To do business in the United States, Toyota has paid significant tribute to the political left which is now thanklessly savaging them. For example, Investor's Business Daily notes Toyota has played ball and knuckled under to Jesse Jackson's race-baiting corporate shakedowns, giving him and other left-wing extortionists the lion's share of $7.8 billion for handouts to his favorite liberal groups.
  • Because Toyota has based its operations in states with lower tax rates and Right to Work laws disallowing forced unionism, the powers-that-be in Washington are out to get them. Obama's Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, has actually advised Americans not to drive Toyotas.

Demilitarizing local police…many 3rd World Dictators Envious

Just over four years ago, Salvatore J. Culosi was gunned down by a Fairfax County, Va., SWAT team member who suspected the 37-year-old optometrist of wagering on football games. County officials insist that it was an accident when Officer Devall Bullock squeezed the trigger of his .45-caliber pistol, sending a bullet into the chest of the unarmed man. In 2007, the Culosi family sued Mr. Bullock and the county for financial and punitive damages related to the incident.

Then-Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert F. Horan Jr. refused to file involuntary-manslaughter charges. The punishment Mr. Bullock suffered for killing a non-threatening man with no criminal record was a three-week suspension without pay.

As former Cato Institute policy analyst Radley Balko meticulously documented in a 2006 paper, “Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America,” law enforcement agencies around the country have increased their use of military-style tactics to deal with low-risk situations. Mr. Balko mapped 43 specific examples in which use of the SWAT team led to the death of an innocent and 173 cases in which military-style tactics were used against people who, apparently unlike Dr. Culosi, had not broken any laws.

One of the highest-profile examples of this type of mistake was the 2008 raid on the home of Berwyn Heights, Md., Mayor Cheye Calvo. SWAT team officers gunned down Mr. Calvo’s dogs, which were attempting to flee out of fear while Mr. Calvo and his family were held at gunpoint - even though they and the friendly black Labrador retrievers had done nothing wrong. The Prince George’s County sheriff’s department cleared itself, declaring the operation a success.

Can You Afford to be Poor in the US?

Writing in the Harvard Law & Policy Review, Matt Fellowes examines the higher prices lower-income workers pay for basic necessities—home loans, groceries, and financial services—and outlines a combination of initiatives that can bring down business costs, curb unscrupulous behavior, and boost consumer knowledge to reduce these prices, creating up to thousands of dollars in extra family spending power.

The working poor (a growing percentage of US citizens) pay more for just about everything from autos and insurance to mortgages, medical care and food…what boils to in essence, a ghetto tax. A single person in this country needs to earn $16.40 hourly wage to afford the average 2-bedroom apartment.

NOTESDoesn’t it make you wonder…the middle class, what’s left of it, is getting poorer. I pity most of today’s college grads who finish school thousands of dollars in debt and with few solid job prospects (I guess they can always become a greeter at Wal Mart). A BA today is worth about as much as my honorary doctorate. One of our readers sent me an email about a CBS report that military families at the Miramax Air Base in California are getting food supplies from an area food bank and that military recruiters now include applications for food stamps in their orientation packets.

With Wal Mart wages now the norm, I wonder which is worth more…the US dollar or the Peso?  It’s obvious they cannot support the economy and it goes back to what I’ve been saying the 1980s – “Burger flippers can’t afford $40K cars!” A wonderful case of Disaster Capitalism and a shell game thanks to government policy and Wall Street greed!

Whatever happened to Usury Laws?

Predatory lending has become the norm in this country, especially with those loan sharks on nearly every corner called ‘check cashing’ storefronts. So what ever happened to usury laws in this country?

Definition: Usury is defined as the act of lending money at an unreasonably high interest rate, this rate is defined at the state level. Repayment of loans at a usurious rate makes repayment excessively difficult to impossible for borrowers. This is also called “loan sharking” or “predatory lending”.

Many states have abandoned such laws in order to allow credit card firms and other financial pirates to scam the low income public.

Usury is a very old notion that is almost as old as banking itself. It was first simple the charging of a fee for a loan, something obviously accepted today. As the notion of interest, or a flat-rate fee, for loans became common, the definition change to charging a rate perceived as excessive.

The Recession Paradox-Where is it?

Prior to moving back to Michigan for family reasons, we heard reports of how bad the recession is in this state. I think it’s a lie. My mother’s home sold in less than three days of listing it for more than its asking price. Valentine’s Day saw a 90-minute wait at an area Olive Garden restaurant. Every retail business we’ve visited during the past 60-days has been crowded with shoppers. Every auction we’ve attended has been crowded with buyers (spending big bucks). There are no boarded up businesses in the community we moved to. Area newspapers would not report on our free Recession Survival workshop.
Reports of rising use of shelters and food banks still make the nightly news, but it seems confined to areas, which have been on a downward spiral for years such as Detroit, Pontiac and Flint.

As reported last week, cities and state budgets are the ones hurting most from the recession; despite massive federal bailout funds. It sure seems to me that political entities never learn to rein in their budgets. But, government was never supposed to be a growth industry.

Perhaps Ayn Rand’s idea portrayed in Atlas Shrugged is coming true – all the smart people have quit working in order to cut government revenues off at the knees!

Creative Uses for Wooden Pallets

I moved into a “new” house last spring — a 1923, one-story bungalow with a full basement. The full, dry, clean basement was a big selling point, as I have a lot of stuff in boxes — years (generations) worth of books, scrapbooks and other mementos. I was thrilled to know I could store these treasures in a safe, dry location.

Have you noticed I used the word “dry” a couple of times? Well, that would be the issue — whether the basement really was dry year round. And, no, it was not (as we found out after the first big rain storm). A lovely little stream runs from one corner, across the floor and pools in the area where the old coal furnace used to sit. Hmmmmm

The best solution for me was to put the boxes up off the floor. We occasionally have a pile of wooden pallets at work. I hauled six of them home, laid black plastic on top of each pallet and piled on the boxes. The plastic prevents any moisture that seeps into the wood from getting into the cardboard boxes. A great solution until I can build permanent shelving.

The pallets were free and have served me well. More at:

28 Tasty Tips to Save on Food

According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008 the average American family spent $6,443 on food. To put that number in perspective, that “average” family consists of 2.5 people (not a nice mental image) with an income of $63,563. So from these numbers we can surmise that our average family spends about 10% of their income on food.

Depending on who you choose to believe (there’s some dispute about this) the average American family also carries a $5,000 balance on credit cards. If they’re paying 15% interest, that’s more than $750/yr.

Conclusion? We could materially impact two expenses simultaneously if we could convince the average American family to eat their credit cards…read all of the tips here:

News Roundup & Commentary

Consumer confidence falls sharply…what a shock!

NEW YORK – A monthly poll showed consumers' confidence took a surprisingly sharp fall in February amid rising job worries. The decline ends three straight months of improvement and raises concerns about the economic recovery.

The Conference Board said Tuesday its Consumer Confidence Index fell almost 11 points to 46 in February, down from a revised 56.5 in January. Analysts were expecting only a slight decrease to 55.

The increasing pessimism is a big blow to hopes that consumer spending will power an economic recovery. Economists watch the confidence numbers closely because consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity. Meanwhile, our federal government is preparing for civil unrest if the sheep get out of control…

Staring at frightening unemployment reports, his massive "stimulus" doing nothing but fan profound taxpayer resentment and Tea Party protests...

President Obama has quietly ordered 80,000+ returning GI's to retrain for deployment in U.S. cities & towns to quell "domestic emergencies"

ALL SIGNS POINT to pent up anger and simmering civil unrest across our nation – from grossly overtaxed workers and citizens fed up with the non-stop flood of illegal aliens...

...to the rising numbers of unemployed and discouraged workers whose job prospects are bleak and whose benefits have run out...

...to the massive underclass that is dependent for its very existence on a continuous stream of taxpayer handouts – the ones who have been promised the earth, moon, and stars on a silver platter by an administration which is now flat broke.

In coming months when middle class Americans run out of jobs, cash, credit, and patience... when the dependent class misses a few welfare checks and Food Stamp cards...

In a recent press interview, Col. Lou Vogler, U.S. Army Northern Command, characterized the Consequence Management Response Force as intended purely "for domestic operations... to reinforce state and local responders."

Vogler's Marine Corps counterpart, Lt. Col. James Shores, confirmed "this [unit] is precedent-setting" in terms of the extent of military preparedness for responding to domestic unrest.

A year ago, The Washington Post noted the Obamacrats would earmark at least 20,000 troops returning from Iraq to deal with "domestic emergencies."

10 Job Sectors in Decline

People in almost every profession may feel like jobs are scarce right now. For many industries, this is a temporary situation. But jobs in some fields are expected to continue disappearing even after the economy picks up.

Is your industry on the decline? The federal government projects that a number of industries will lose jobs from 2008 to 2018.

"You can't sit around and wait for news to come out about what's going to happen to your industry," said Alexandra Levit, author of "New Job, New You." "You have to be proactive about this."

Disappearing Jobs

Here's a list of the top 10 industries expected to lose the most jobs by 2018 -- and what to do if you're working in one of them:

1. Department stores: Projected to lose 10.2 percent of the 1.56 million jobs they had in 2008.

2. Semiconductor manufacturing: Projected to lose 33.7 percent of the 432,000 jobs it had in 2008.

3. Motor vehicle parts manufacturing: Projected to lose 18.6 percent of its 544,000 jobs…More at:

LANSING — Some lawmakers want to require police departments to charge suspects with a crime before seizing property.

Even though the Constitution’s Fourth Amendment protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, Dan Korobkin, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan, said seizures of property are a big problem in the state.

“People who aren’t committing or being charged with a crime are having their property taken away,” Korobkin said. “It flips the saying, innocent until proven guilty.”

The ACLU sued the Detroit Police Department for a 2008 raid on the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit. The police suspected the gallery of serving alcohol without a permit.

That incident sparked legislative interest.

Police seized 40 legally parked cars belonging to some of the 100 people charged with loitering.

Those whose cars were seized had to pay fines of about $1,000 to retrieve them, according to the ACLU, although all criminal charges were dismissed.

Korobkin said that is a common practice, not just in Detroit but all around the state and country.

A person whose property is seized by the police must prove his or her innocence, even if not charged with a crime.

When the 16th Amendment Became Law

Ninety-four years ago this week the United States Constitution suffered its worst-ever addition when the 16th Amendment, which permits a progressive income tax, was ratified by Congress. In just one sentence, a mere 31 words long, our relationship with those who would rule over us was changed dramatically.

A graduated federal income tax became legal for the first time in our country’s history on Feb. 25, 1913, thanks to 16th Amendment. Prior to its ratification the courts had repeatedly ruled that a progressive income tax—that is, the more you earn the greater percentage the government would take—was unconstitutional.

Thanks to a virtual conspiracy among the rich and powerful and their lackeys in Congress, Americans were persuaded that a graduated income tax (a key plank in the Communist Manifesto, by the way) would “soak the rich” and shower benefits on the poor. Instead, as many warned at the time, the tax and those who enforce it have done incalculable harm to the spirit of freedom and independence that once typified this country.

Gatekeepers Destroy American Democracy

It’s no wonder to me the mainstream press and both political parties dislike the Tea Party movement…after all, it might mean an actual challenge to their power. Each political party, lobbyist and other special interest group have a vested interest in keeping citizens from getting involved in the political process.

The sheep in this country are kept docile and in the dark about the political process…how to run for office, how to initiate a voter petition, even how our Bill of Rights works (or doesn’t work). We do not have a level playing field and system is set up (by Democrats & Republicans) to keep 3rd parties from gaining access to the system.

It’s easy to see how the re-education of our young people has worked to keep them from knowing American history or how the system is supposed to work. State and local governments work hard to ensure we cannot even exercise our right to public assembly…without the necessary permits and fees! In New York, for example there is a fee to use a bullhorn at a public rally! Whoever came up with that should be tarred and feathered.

Our nation was founded by protestors, not sheep. Today, most folks are so frustrated by our current system (which does not resemble what our Founders had in mind) they’ve given up practicing democracy – BECAUSE we no longer live in one. Our Bill of Rights has been eroded, our schools ‘dummied down,’ and our two-party system is in gridlock most of the time.

Contemplating the huge financial divide between CEOs and slave workers (something which has affected nearly all of the middle class), the increasing polarization of classes in this country…is it any wonder so many in government and elsewhere are predicting urban chaos or class warfare within the next few years?

As I always say We don’t need another election, we need another revolution!

It’s high time we said no to legislators and took our country back. With that in mind you should consider joining a tea party chapter in your area (or start one). Get rid of elected representatives in Congress who’ve served too long. Make your voice heard…you’ll learn a lot by reading the following book or by visiting her site at:
